I've nearly got all the bits I need to start playing with a very simple home studio setup (Yongnuo and Sunpak flash guns, RF-602 wireless units, 2 white umbrella's, stands, grips etc), I've just the backdrop to sort but can come to that later.

My question is, what is the difference in light distribution/harshness from flash through an umbrella as opposed to flash through a soft box?

If this has already been answered somewhere, please forgive me, but if you could point me in the direction of the answer, that would be great.
 
I believe it has been answered many times but I even struggle to find answers sometimes. I can't comment from experience but I've been looking into it myself. The main difference, I believe, is how much more controllable the lighting is from a softbox. I've struggled to tell the difference in shadow softness (or greyness).
