Afte feeling limited on how wide I can go by my kit lens/17-85mm (not much difference anyway  ) I want to get an ultra wide lens for my 500D mainly for shooting in clubs/bars for work. I want to go as WIDE as possible :p

After looking briefly on the internets I found:
  • Sigma 8-16 f4.5-5.6
  • Sigma 10-22
  • Tokina 11-16 f2.8
  • Canon 10-22 f3.5-4.5
  • Tamron 10-24

There are probably more, wondering if anyone has experience with any of them or any recommendations. In summary my wishlist is (with some of the usual stuff :D) :
  • As wide as possible for crop body
  • AF accuracy (low light)
  • AF speed
  • Low distortion
  • Sharpness
  • Wide aperture

Thanks all
Kyle

Hi Kyle.

This post probably wont be much help to you but I was about to buy the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 for my old D300. I ended up moving to full frame in the end (so didn't purchase) but off all the UWA lenses I tried (Nikon fit) this was the one that I would have purchased. Very nice lens in all aspects.

I have a Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 and it's a nice lens, although it is my second one as the first was sent back as it was soft down the left hand side of the frame. My current lens is equally sharp around all edges and takes a good sharp picture, you won't go far wrong with this lens providing you check the copy first and be prepared to return it until you get a good one.

However, I believe that Canon have dropped the price of the 10-22mm now, not sure how much it now sells for but this is probably the better of the two lens and will most likely be a good copy from the off! If the prices are close, I would go for the Canon.

Tokina is also supposed to be good as above, but if the Canon is cheaper I would go for that!

Well the Tokina will give you a faster lens but you'll lost 1mm! Canon 10-22mm gets my vote but that's because I have one :D

Tokina has a new 12-28 f4 that KR raves about

just looked on amazon now, the cheapest canon 10-22 is still about 100 more than the tokina!

yep that 1mm amounts to 5 degrees FOV both vertically and horizontally! :gag:

Thanks, will take a look now

Having had the Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 and currently owning the Canon EF-S 10-22mm I would go for the Canon any day, miles better imo. The Tokina looks good but if you want to go 'really wide' the extra mm and the wide end is a massive difference. I'm almost always shooting mine at 10mm. The Tokina seems a bit more robust though

There's a Sigma 4.5mm fisheye for crops but their 8-16 seems to be the widest non-fisheye available.

The difference between 8mm and 12mm is significant at such short focal lengths...

I have had a Canon 10-22 for more than a year and use it all the time.
Great quality images and a well-built lens.
Damn expensive, but they don't depreciate too much so you won't lose a fortune.
After looking at most of your other options for a long time when I bought my 10-22, it seems like the best choice!

i went through this and as i wasnt sure how much use i would get out of a UWA i went for the tokina 12-24mm great lens and fixed F4 throughout the range. and as goes to 24mm you can get away using it alot more than i thought. only thing i find is the tokina AF motor is a bit noisy, but in pratical use it doesnt bother me. the canon 10-22mm is nice but i got the tokina for £230, so price won, but im not dissapointed with the tokina at all :) HTH

jamez2013 where did you get your tokina for £230 from?! was it second hand?

anyone familiar with the sigma 8-16 here? it really is the widest and a few reviews say it is sharp, but have a range a opinions on its AF performance

apologies, yes secondhand if you don't mind second hand i tend to find the third party lenses can be had a very good prices. someone may correct me here but i think anything beyond 10mm becomes a fisheye really.

The Tokina being f2.8 would give you an advantage in the kind of light in bars and clubs.

Canon 10-22. Absolutely love mine.
