Hi,

I arrived in the UK a few months ago .. I have been working as a freelance photographer, a few photos published...

I would like to apply for a press card, I guess I need to apply through a gatekeeper which are associations of journalist or photographers ... I just want to have your advices about them ... which one is good ...? what services do they offer ..? what do I need to apply for a press card ..?

Thanks ..

Rudy

I would like to know more about this... so is it a case of flashing my card at a gig saying I am here to take shots for a magazine and they'll let me in? ;)

Just want to know if its worth applying...

Thanks Andrew .. I already have this page.. but I just want to know what are the differencies between the associations.. experiences of peoples ... tips..

I used to be a Member of BECTU (and to get into that, I had to get nine other BECTU Members to nominate me). I could use my BECTU card (and my BBC, ITN, SKY cards) to get in almost anywhere.

If you are found to be abusing your Press Card(s), they can be revoked. Not worth the risk.

For gigs you have to have a pass which will be issued to you buy the concert promoters i.e. smj or livenation ect... It would be hard to get into a gig any other way, but it might be worth a try

What do you have to do in order to get a press card and what does the press card offer? What is its purpose?
I take it you need to be part of some sort of organisation or association to get a card, how do you become a member?

You have to be a member of the press, that's the whole point of them and the sole reason they exist.

look up the national union of journalists of the british union of journalists, they both issue press cards. You need to be able to prove you have income from relevant work etc.

I spoke to the NUJ, as I was advised that if I wanted freelance work with a local paper they'd rather I was in the NUJ. The outcome was that I couldn't join unless I could prove I made a the main part of my income through journalism, which I don't!
