Reproduced from a local newsletter, regarding the expiry date of your photocard driving licence (this is different to the expiry date on your paper licence)

Driving Licence Warning
Have you checked the expiry date on your photo-card
Driving Licence?
Look at the very small print on the front of your licence card
item 4b shows a date –
what it does not tell you is that this is the expiry date
of your licence.
Your photo card driving licence is only valid for 10 years.
These licences were first issued in 1998.
To date approx 16,000 have expired
only 11,500 have been renewed.
Are you one of the 4,500 driving without
a valid licence?
It could cost you up to a £1000 fine.
Another 300,000 licences will expire in the next year
Please check the date on your licence.
More bad news – it will cost you £17.50 and a new photograph
to renew your licence.
Form D1 is available from the Post Office.

one of the daily's ran this a few months ago (when the first month's card were expiring) - there are so many people out there unaware of the expiry date of the photo card it's scary, they obviously didn't read the instructions!

All of mine show expiry on the card as 2034 which is the same as the paper licence.

Note that the card is not really valid as a licence unless it is acompanied by the paper part. For instance, it doesn't show my class D and C provisional entitlements (which run out this year anyway unless I take the medical test again).

I change mine every time I move, which is every five years or so...never noticed the expiry date though...lol

I've received a letter from the DVLA in the lest week about my licence expiring so they do provide you with some decent notice.

Steve.

I got my photo license late last year and it says it expires in 2014...it only lasts a mere 6 years!

I have just re-checked mine. The 2034 expiry dates are the individual category dates on the rear. The date on the front (4b) is 2017. Ten years after issue!

Steve.

4a = from
4b = to
4c = issuer

Why they couldn't just write from and to on the front escapes me.

Thats encouraging!

I think this has been a recent change.

I read elsewhere they are considering dropping the £17 charge due to the muddiness of the procedure.

Both mine and my wifes' are due to expire exactly 10 years after my change of address and her change of surname.

I've checked mine and despite having had two new ones in the past 10 years due to address changes, it still runs out on the 10-year anniversary of (re) issue...
While I'm in bloody Afghanistan...so I'll be seeing if someone can do that on my behalf while I'm away...lol

I have to renew my licence every three years (medical reasons) but I don't have to submit a new photo :shrug:

and I get it free :D
