UK iPad prices announced

Apple and Adobe both have never been known for their fairness in pricing products for the UK market.

I read somewhere that 64% of Photoshop users are on an illegal copy. Which is fair enough given the price.

Love that will it shred link.

I think multitouch tablets in general have access to potentially HUGE market given enough time. Given that a huge proportion of the population only comes online to post on forums, browse news, access facebook etc, using a touchscreen device has to be much, much easier than sitting at a desk using a computer.

Unfortunately, at Apples pricepoint I can't see a huge uptake from non-techies. The iphone is massively popular because although it is an expensive device, 95% of those buying them spread the cost over 18 months including their data/text/call contracts so it doesn't FEEL particularly expensive.

To shell out more than the cost of a low/mid-range laptop on a device which does less than a laptop will (I think) be more than many will want to bear.

I would love an ipad, but when they were announced I set myself a limit of £350 for the most basic version and I won't be crossing that line. Optimistic price perhaps, but beyond that the cost starts to get a bit silly.

I'll wait til they start appearing used on ebay and then re-think things :)

Facebook... Flash... ;) But in a few years either all slates will have flash or the games will have been converted to something else. :)

Your post made me think actually, I can see this sort of device being given away as "free gifts" by companies like CPW, just like netbooks are given away at the moment. That could be one of the major ways to "sell" these things. Problem is the iPad is way to expensive for that and at the moment all the other decent ones aren't going to be cheap enough either.

Only 64%? I'd have expected it to be in the region of 85%. Not that Adobe particularly care I expect, as long as those using it for business pay...

Not a device I am gonna jump in to buy as I dont go into Starbuck that often.

But you would have to be pretty daft to buy the first generation release. Always wait for the 2nd one.

Remember of course that it takes a first generation device to open up bigger, better and cheaper versions of the same in the future. I say give it 2/3 years and a good proportion of us will have a device like the ipad (in terms of general size and function).

A lot of posts I've seen on here and elsewhere simply don't look past the fact it's run ing iPhone software so declare that 'they don't get it'. If you think of it as a super easy to use, non-maintenance day-to-day browsing device it makes a lot more sense. Not at this price mind, but I'm sure that'll change.

Had a look at a US one here in London yesterday. Nothing special at all. it does very little for the money. I expect it to at least run "word" etc and allow editing.

Same as my iphone..still happy with my 2g the original version. The 3g does not offer anything more that i want.

Very true. I just think if they stay the cost they are now I don't think they will make an impact. Only those that run a full OS will ever be in with a chance of replacing peoples computers* (and the iphone and android OS ones aren't designed to) so they need to be cheap enought to buy as well as a computer.

*These devices are generally designed to consume, not produce, alongside them being a "peripheral" not a "machine" (if that makes sense). You need a computer to run it and plenty of other "peripherals" such as mp3 players and the like.

That's exactly it. In it's current form I would still need my laptop as well as an ipad type device. £300 for a slightly more functional device (with flash!) makes sense perfectly to me.

I'm not convinced that a full blown OS will ever work in this form factor - too heavy and requires the user to look after it. The massive benefit of the iPhone OS is that it doesn't go wrong and doesn't need stuff like antivirus, clearing up of files etc etc. Only time will tell if either Apple up the raw functionality or Android surpasses Apple in that respect.

Personally I'm not all that interested in anything of this type running Windows 7, but that might just be me.

I think 52 tp members should all put £10 together and we share the ipad and it changes hands each week. :D

I wasn't suggesting they should have a full blown OS on, just that to have any real chance of replacing a laptop only those that do have a chance.

Personally i'm interested in one with a full blown OS because I want to use it to create and to use instead of a laptop when space/weight is tight. That's just me however, most people just want something to consume stuff on.

Im an Apple fan but the iPad is just a big iPhone to be honest, they can stick it where the sun don't shine.

No it's not, it's a big iPod Touch, it has no phone. ;)

This looks neat if they can improve the transfer speed between iPhone and iPad.

I have said many times before, many of you will be eating your hats regarding the IPad.

It will change the game, and there will be several ipad derivatives in coming 18 months.

Everyone said how bad it would do in America, look what happened there.

Ebook reader, Portable movie player at a decent size, internet, portable games console, edit word docs/create presentations etc. with Iwork, show clients a portfolio with it, thousands of useful apps to come over the next 12 months. Who would want that?

It is the ultimate keep kids quiet on journeys tool, ultimate net tool for older people who don't get computers (whether apple market this is highly doubtful but it is amazing for that purpose) Great tool for those who travel a lot. Ideal for holidays, does most things a netbook does.

No flash, but truth be told even non apple fan boys are saying flash is a dying system and html 5 is the future. I can carry loads of magazines on it when something like zinio releases an app.

so lets look. I can carry all my magazines, a few movies, a few books, a few games, some office software, bit of music, some useful bits and bobs type apps, have my email with me on a small device with a larger screen than a netbook that instantly powers up, and due to it's closed system is ridiculously unlikely to get a virus.

Yeah i mean really, what is there to like about it?

for something that expensive it should support pretty much everything and especially flash, it's plain retarded on macs part to be such douches

i'm more excited about what i'm having for breakfast than this tbh :)

How many people are seriously considering buying an ebook reader (and then going for a iPad anyway as it has major flaws in the ebook department)

Does it? That was one of the parts of the iPad that I played with that seriously impressed me. What exactly are the issues with its eBook abilities?

Whats good about the Blend video, even after he smashes it a number of times, you can still see the keyboard on the display!

Shane, don't bother with iphones just yet, 4G is to be released soon, so wait to see contract/prices.

Did people not say this about the iPhone?

64GB  Nice one Guys. Must admit I can see the extra space coming in handy with the camera connection kit.

Congrats!

Did people not say this about the iPhone?

Yes, and did the iPhone not revolutionise the mobile phone market? How many non-iPhone smartphones are out there now compared to before the iPhone was released? :)

No question this device is a game changer.

The iphone was a game changer in the smartphone world.

Although I expect the same will happend as did with the iphone. Apple will do it first, other manufacturers will then do it better. I look forward to the better, cheaper devices coming out.

Nope, the Smartphone market was already there.

The only "new" thing Apple brought to the playground was the App store

Any info on the 3G contract prices?

Recommended solution from another forum :-

Our O2 Text & Web sim card gives you 300 texts and unlimited internet
when you top up just £10 a month.

Top up On top of your credit you get:

£10 - £14 300 free UK texts and unlimited internet
£15 - £29 500 free UK texts and unlimited internet
£30+ Unlimited free UK texts and unlimited internet

That looks like a good deal to me :)

The market was there, but smartphones prior to the iphone were chunky, clunky things. I know, I had a few of them. Many of the features the iphone introduced to the market were prettu slick and now standard in many smartphones.

I'm not an apple fanboi, far from it. But there is no denying that the hardware in my phone is based on idead and features that were first seen in the iphone

There was a smartphone market, sure, I'd been using Windows Mobile a good 3 years before the first iPhone was released. But, go into any mobile phone shop now. You can't even buy a phone that just makes calls, they've all got smartphone features, primarily due to the fact that people demanded them as the iPhone became so popular.

Without the iPhone, I seriously doubt the other manufacturers phones would be at the point they are today, and certainly not as popular to anybody other than business users.

Can you just put your sim in from your iPhone? It's got a free data rate.

Unless you're going to be away from a computer for a long time, the 16GB iPad is probably enough storage as I'd want to stream media to it as much as possible.

Afraid not. Its a new 'microsim' so much smaller than a normal one. Apparently you can cut up a normal one to fit!

Yep - as long as you're careful this works fine. The electronic part of the microsim is identical to the electronic part of a standard SIM.

On the price issue, it does occur to me that the price of the iPad (without any kind of data contract) isn't really much more than the price of a high end smart phone (without a contract) e.g. the HTC Desire is about £399ish

Except as I pointed out, there is one problem... Price... People's laptops already do this and most people aren't going to buy both, yet still need a laptop. As you rightly point out netbooks can do all those things too, yet they are around £200 (I hate netbooks too, funny how the original design has collapsed and they have ended up being much bigger and more powerful, almost like laptops...).

If these devices can be sold at around £200 I can see lots of the general consumer buying them (and that is where the market is won or lost if you don't have a loyal fanbase (Apple), that is where Apple and other companies will tell if they have won or lost), at the price they are now (not just Apples ones, most of the others out/coming out), well...

Does it? That was one of the parts of the iPad that I played with that seriously impressed me. What exactly are the issues with its eBook abilities?

Compare it to an actual ebook reader and there is a massive difference. Smaller, lighter, weeks from one charge, easier on the eyes, cheaper...

In the sense that if brought the smartphone out of the business world and into the mainstream world and i'd suggest that is partly to do with the tens of millions of $ in advertising.

Nope, the Smartphone market was already there.

Pretty much, along with a more consumer oriented product.

True, but gotta remember that most people need (want) a phone, so to pay just a little extra to get an iphone, it wasn't that bad- as they "needed" a phone. Getting somebody to spend £400+ on something they didn't have before, is quite a jump. But we shall see :)

It will be a luxury, but for the business side, the price is acceptable as far as I am concerned, and for the home user it is a luxury. So are home cinema systems, high end hifi, netbooks as well as a laptop and desktop, but yet we still buy them. Why? to treat ourselves.

For me it will be a very luxurious purchase. One I will get hours of pleasure from. I bought my PS3 for the same thing, I have a computer to play games on, and a DVD player, but Blu Ray, amazing graphics ability to play hi def movies, which made us buy our movies again to experience them in Hi Def.

People will buy them as a treat, albeit a very expensive one, but what it can do means I would use it constantly and get my moneys worth out of it. If I use one daily for a year I will have paid just over a pound a day for the privilege, just the same as I do for my Sky HD.

That IMHO is the reasons it will sell big over here.

Is this from first hand experience, or are you going from what others have said?

The big plus for me over many of the ebook readers is the backlight and the ability to display colour pictures!!!

I sold my Sony ebook reader when I got my iPad and have not looked back. Battery is not quite as good (but this has a backlight) but I think most people will be pleasantly surprised with how long it does actually last.

Businesses have been using slates for years but they never caught on, partly due to price ad partly due to not being a market for them.

But mainly because they were trying to run Windows (or a half-arsed version of Windows) without having the power needed to do so. Exactly like the ex-Slate and exactly unlike the iPad.
