Does anyone have it?

I declined it when I bought my latest car last week despite having a replacement tyre a week earlier due to a horseshoe nail very close to the side wall. I thought the puncture was bad luck but on Friday I had another horseshoe nail removed from the new car tyre fortunately this one was repairable even though I now have run flats.

Does anyone have any experience of tyre insurance? There is a new equestrian centre next to us with lots of horses being taken onto the single track road, plus due to my son moving to another pre-school I will pass another equestrian centre ona daily basis so my feeling is that a 5 year policy could be worthwhile. My main concern is them declining claims as none of the companies are household names so not really sure of their reputation.

How much does the policy cost? How much do tyre repair costs?

A lot of the indies do tyre repair for £5-£10 so tyre insurance is probably going to be a complete rip off.

If the equestrian centre are regularly dropping horse shoe nails so people have punctures I'd be asking them to tidy up after themselves or start paying for the punctures they cause!

A 5 year policy for replacement run flats if £295. A replacement tyre ranges from £150 to £240. Basically I could pay for the policy in 2 punctures which is unusual but i've demonstrated that it's possible.

There's very little that can be done about the equestrian centre. There's already a lot of bad feeling with the new one that opened. The horses are allowed on the road so if a nail comes out it's tough luck unfortunately. I pass 2 businesses plus one private owner who has 5 horses so could never prove which one caused the punture.

It feels like i've had a run of bad luck so i'm planning on spending a few more days thinking about it but wanted to know of any experience with claims?

Will they measure tread depths for betterment?

I guess it's like all insurance. Expensive until you need it, and then depending on the company you get a good or poor experience.

I would suggest getting a copy of the policy and checking the small print to see if any excesses, what's covered, whats not (prob malicious damage)

Does it cover just the 4 tyres on there or any replacements to 2019? In reality, tyres are not going to last 5 years (unless yuo drive like a nun and do minimal mileage.

Having a look at MWD policy's small print it's only puncture repair up to the value of £50 a time

and they have quite a few exclusions that would allow them to potentially wiggle out of many claims:

What is not covered

This Insurance will not cover

1. Any claim occurring within 28 days from the insurance Policy Start Date.

2. Damage caused by improper use of the Insured Vehicle, incorrect tyre pressure, wheel alignment, balance, defective steering or suspension.

3. Cosmetic damage.

4. Replacement or repair of Tyres required as a result of faulty manufacture or design.

5. Tyres that do not carry an ‘E’ mark.

6. Tyres that are below the Legal Limit when the incident occurs.

7. Any repairs if they are covered by any other Insurance policy, warranty or guarantee.

8. Any repairs not authorised by Us prior to the repair work being carried out.

9. Your Vehicle if it is used as a taxi or driving tuition vehicle, it has been modified (unless We have agreed this before the Policy Start Date), if it is over 3500kg GVW, if it is used in any sort of race or other competition.

Limit of 5 tyres and they way they word it would suggest it'll only ever be a pro rata payment on the life left on the tyre too. You have to contact them before you make a claim so you can't just pop along and get it done unless it is an emergency which doesn't have a definition. They have nominated repairers so again you are restricted in where you can take it. Malicious damage is covered but it has to be reported to the police and you have to get a crime number before you stand a chance of getting tyres out of them.

I know how expensive 'run on flat' tyres can be.

You may have to 'tread' carefully, if you have a 'Goodyear' you may not have a puncture at all....

I'm tyred now!

On the advice of a neighbour, I called the council and try are sending a street sweeper down.

I've looked at a few now and the max payouts vary. I'm pretty sure that when the tyres need natural replacement I'll replace with non run flats.

Condition 8 is a killer. I can't wait for authorisation. I need my car daily.

That's an issue with a lot of these insurance policies.

I'd keep the £300 and make sure the council keeps on top of sweeping the roads clear of shoes and give the equestrian centres a grilling over how many nails they are losing. They clearly don't understand a blow out at high speed could be fatal so they need to make more effort as well.

Etyres used to have lifetime free mobile puncture repair when you bought tyres from them. They stopped doing it unfortunately. I wonder if other tyre suppliers offer any similar schemes? That's another avenue worth exploring if they have a place nearby that is open when you might need a repair.

If the equestrian centres have on-site farriers, have a word with them too; and if not, find out who they use and rip them a new one.
Either the nails they use are shallow, or they're just not bothering to clear up after themselves.

Can you get tyre insurance for good year tyres? Saying as they are so bad and all...

Limit of 5 tyres

Really? So the maximum they would ever pay out is £250? That doesn't sound right.

I don't think I came across MWD but when I was glancing through various google results I was finding they would pay up to £150.

I've decided to hold off, call it bad luck and hope that if there are any more nails on the road that the road sweeper picks them up.

That's 5 replacement tyres. It doesn't say the limit on number of puncture repairs.

Ah OK. I was reading is as no replacements, repair only. That makes more sense.

Yeah, I guess all insurance is about sharing risk with other people with a "trusted third party" taking their cut. It has to work out chepaer in the long run if you can afford the occasional hit. Also, right after a puncture is a really bad time to buy it ;)

dont see how you could prove or disprove tyre pressure in exclusion 2... as when it''s puncture... normally ends up about 14 psi...

while i agree nails on the road are bad, i really dont think its something that they can control completely. even if they are from their horses.

this time of year into the winter especially, shoes can just come off anyway after a period of time but mud sucks shoes off horses. and whos to say they werent picked up by mud in other car tyres and then deposited onto the road etc etc.
