Turned a corner to see a Jay on the ground a short distance away, by the time I raised the camera and pressed the focus button it was launching itself towards me and I ended up clipping the wing. Another for the bin.

You could have a good stab at fixing it... Increase the canvas size and fill in the top edge with the clone tool and finish off the tip of the wing. It should be possible as it doesn't look as if there's too much to create at the wingtip.
