So, we have a holiday pencilled in for first two weeks of September, a desire to spend a lot of it taking photographs and don't want to fly for more than 5 hrs. Any ideas? I would prefer a pleasant climate!

Why not travel/backpack around? Perhaps around Europe or something?

You could travel to all the major cities in Europe, plenty of photo opps there :D

I was going to say Scotland, but then you came up with "pleasant climate" -but then I've just got sunburned in Oban!

It depends on your budget, Scandinavia is a superb location but pricey, Croatia is stunning and then there is Italy, Milan and the lakes. Geneva is a fab city and some stunning stuff in the Alps. The South fo France is pretty popular with painters too so going to be a good togging location too and you have Marseilles........

Another vote for Cyprus :)

Fantastic places, wonderful peaople, fabulous scenery...

Not sure where exactly it is birdy961 as I was only asked 2 days ago to go. It is situated in army territory *** thats all I know so far.

Depends on which kind of photographs you want to take. For landscapes, I'm going to the North Spanish mountains around that time and there are a couple of companies that do supported tours for photography in Picos de Europa. You don't don't need to book with a photography company, but can get deep into the mountains and stay in excellent refuges high up by only booking a mountain guide so you don't have to worry about routes.

For cities, Lisbon is excellent and should have a reasonable climate at that time of the year.

What Jas said.... plus there is a lot of Spain to explore and a lot of it has superb mountains, seascapes, traditional life etc etc.

Especially here in the Valencian region ;)

Cheers,

Neil

"Scandinavia is a superb location" Yes (just deleted pricey) :)
If you are in the " macro-landscape-wildlife-all nature " mode - go to N. Wärmland near Torsby, Sweden close to the Norwegian border.. I will be there the first week in september. Training our dogs for huntig elk´s in october.

Turkey...Istanbul is an awesome place and great for pics

Another vote for Turkey, Istanbul for a few days then a few days in Kaş and Antalya (Kaleici), fly back to Istanbul and off home. Lovely weather, lovely people and economical too :D

New York.....may be over 5 hours but LOTS to shoot.

Got me honeymoon in New York in December... think i'm more excited about the bargains to be had at B&H! lol Can't wait to get out there.

As for somewhere within 5 hours, St. Petersburg? Shouldnt be too cold in Sep. lol. lovely city, shame the trip there came before the DSLR.

We just got married in Cyprus and the place is wonderful for pictures. Went to a place called Peyia after the ceremony for the reception and our photographer got some wicked shots. If i get them loaded up somewhere will post a few. Cant recommend it enough

Another vote for Cyprus :)

Any chance you could shift it back by a week and head to the Auvergne?

If so, you could hit this in Le Puy en Velay:

http://www.roideloiseau.com/

The Auvergne is stunning, but you'd need a car to get around and make the best of it. The temps are usually around the upper 20s to lower 30s C in mid September.

ETA for those who don't know this event:

Imagine a medieval city of about the same size and as importance as York. Imagine the entire historic centre of the city being taken over for 4 days for an open archery competition and renaissance re-enactment and living history involving thousands of people. Imagine rival companies of freebooters rampaging through the streets causing havoc. Imagine medieval and renaissance entertainers performing on street corners and in front of a gloriously floodlit cathedral. Imagine taverns and "camps" set up in shady corners and squares; imagine medieval streets torchlit at night and packed with promenaders until 2am with no drunkenness and no violence. Imagine processions of drummers and flag-throwers parading around the streets. Imagine the girl and the trained wolf performing with only a leash and a ricketty picket fence between wolf and onlookers. Imagine sitting outside a tavern nursing a beer with "criminals" being dragged past you to "execution" and flocks of geese and trains of pack horses being driven past you to market; imagine everyone in town dressed in renaissance costume, even if going to work in the office. Imagine a major event in a major visitor centre where you can easily find a good meal without being ripped off. Imagine not daring to switch your camera off in case you missed something.

That is Les Fetes Renaissances du Roi de l'Oiseau. The biggest renaissance re-enactment and living history event in the world.

PS - you can also hire a costume and join in!
