Two questions

Been away for a long time but looking to get back into photography. Got two questions..

Picked up a budget Canon 60d and 50mm and 24mm lens. Going abroad in August and wondering if it can go in my hand luggage?

I'd love add a 70-200 or similar but will have to go without due to budget!

Secondly the camera seems to have artefacts in the viewfinder which don't appear on photos, would a service clean these up or am I better just leaving it!

I always take my camera in hand luggage.

If you can see things in the VF that don't appear in pictures it's probably contamination either on the focus screen or possibly on the mirror or in the VF itself. I'm afraid this is something that SLR's and DSLR's are prone too. It's annoying but if you can live with it maybe that's the thing to do as if you get it cleaned it'll probably just happen again.

I take my camera and lenses in my hand luggage too.

I had some bits in my viewfinder on my Canon 5D3 some years ago. They were able to remove some of them, but not all. I think it is easier to get in to clean them in some cameras than others.

I have never risked or entrusted my camera gear to the hold luggage...................the only exception I made one time to put my tripod into to my suitcase but as it happened I never even used it

PS even back in my film days I used an X-ray proof bag for the film and always requested a hand search of that bag.

Hi and welcome back.

It’s answered already but…

Camera gear always in hand luggage (in fact you might find you’re in trouble if you’re putting your spare batteries in the hold).

Any foreign objects you see through the viewfinder are on a different optical path to the one taking the picture. So it’s either trying to get rid of them with a risk of damaging something or learn to live with them.

@Phil V thanks for the welcome back!

Appreciate all the replies, will make sure I carry it with me and just deal with the bits in the viewfinder :)

An air blower will usually sort out dust/debris on the mirror assembly.

EF 70-200 f4L should be reasonably priced now, used at places like MPB. If you can't stretch to that there's always a 70-300 Tamron for much less than £100.

Everyone has answered the main question, my camera gear never leaves my side when I am flying.

110% worth getting the 70-200 f4, it was my favourite lens when I had a Canon DSLR.

And agree with others, if I’m flying my gear doesn’t leave my side.

a mate of mine had this issue the other week on a flight to Cran Canaria, he took a power bank with him and put it inadvertently in his hold luggage instead of hand luggage, they took him off the flight to explain what it was , all the whilst his wife was sat on the plane wondering what the hell he had done

I had the 70-300mm for some time, before getting rid of it when I 'moved up' to the 100-400.

I actually really liked the old one, and it was perfect for travel.

It's an EF fitment too - so if you ever do go full frame Canon, it will still fit.

Not claiming any of these are wonderful, but i put together an album of shots i took with it for when I sold it and never deleted it.

Peruse it here for some idea..

I think most (if not all) of these would have been taken with a crop sensor. 600D, 80D, maybe a 20D.

The only downside would be that your minimum angle of view (field of view? never sure what to call this) on a crop sensor would be equivalent to 112mm on a full-frame.

When we went to Lanzarote with Easyjet. I took my camera bag on as hand luggage. As was allowed an extra piece of luggage along with carry on suitcase. We travel light.
