Yes
Had a heads up today that Nikon are announcing two new machines in June 08.

The permitations we have are either

Nikon D90

Nikon D300 Full frame

Nikon D3s with 21 mega pixel sensor

Nikon D3 with smaller body akin to the 5D.

Personally, I am stumped, but logically, I think that the D80 is due an upgrade / new expeed processor in a D90 and that a full frame D300 would sell very well and compete with the 5D or 5D Mark II if it ever comes out.

Any thoughts?

D.

Well since the recently released D3 firmware mentions a 24MP D3x I reckon that could be a good bet.

I have to say I'm kind of hoping that something will see a drop in the D3 price, as I want another one, I just dont get on with the D300. In fact I've considered swapping the D300 for a D2xs.

Pete

I think #1 and #3 are most likely as they have the features that would go well against Canon's and Sony cameras (no offence toward the other brands).
After all, Sony's preparing a new sensor and a camera to go with it... although if Nikon went with its own sensor, it could be anything.
The A350 and 450D pack a punch and Nikon probably doesn't want to stay behind.
My guess is that the D90 (or whatever it's going to be called) will have 12 megapixel sensor, live view, some of the D60's new and nice features, Expeed processing engine, 3fps, and no built-in AF motor, as I think they want to get all their cameras to AF-S / AF-I only (yeah, I don't like it much either, but it seems to be the way they'll go).

I think a replacement for the D80 is a sure bet. And if I had to pick one other it would be a D3s.

Wouldn't a FF D300 and a shrunk down D3 be pretty much the same thing?

Well sony stated a while back they had sold Nikon the 24mp sensor they have produced, sony will be bringing their 24mp beast out later in the year so why not Nikon as well.

I agree with snakeman's comments - A D90 and D3s/x is my guess too. I'm really looking forward to seeing the D3s/x specs personally.:D

^^^ Have to agree also. What ever happens, I'm sticking with DX for the time being, as my 17-55 and 10-20 are DX and I cant afford to replace them at the same time as getting a new body!

Looking forward to seeing what they are offering though, and any price drops seen in the current kit :D

Strategically for Nikon, this would make the most sense. Nikon really need a full frame, high MP camera to compete against Canon's 1Ds MK3 at the top end. And the D80 is due for a replacement.

Out of interest, I wonder what is going to happen to Nikon's naming convention, as soon they are going to run out of names. Ie, the D60 replacement can't be a D70 as we've already had that. A D90 replecment can't be a D100 as that is the next line up. At least the pro cameras can go D3, D4, D5, D6 all the way up to D39 before having problems. And they can throw a few Xs and Ss in there as well.

^^^ A fair point. In answer? No idea. I was wondering this not that long ago. Perhaps they will change their entire convention to something different?

They will change the numbering system for the consumer SLRs ( D?0 numbering )

The D?00 numbers are the prosumer range, and since they update around every year or so have plenty of numbers lift. Similar with the Pro D? numbering system.

Nikon only have an issue with the 2 digit numbering system for the mid-low end bodies. I can see this changing at some point, in fact going to d?000 makes more sense as the lower the number the better the camera then.

Well - we are now selling D200's brand new at £599.99. Bargain for a camera that good.

Pete/Diego.

I think creating a DX line when the D90's replacement comes is a safe guess.
FX line would be there for the full frame DSLRs and FX for the ones with an APS-C sized sensor.

FX is full frame

Interesting news. I'd agree with the above about which ones will announced, be interesting to see the D3 x/s or whatever they call it.

Do we really need 24MP? It's getting silly.

Can't hold back progress...

The majority of us don't need 24MP no, but some do. If nobody needed that many MP then nobody would buy a medium format dgtital back.

Pete

Just noticed the typo, thanks :)

Thing is we already have a DX and FX line, there's nothing to create. There's plenty of "FX" lenses already, and loads of DX ones. And now we have bodies with both. I'm not sure what you mean by your statment.

^^ true - but the file sizes! You just need more and more - more computer power - more storage - more ££££ - and are the pics really any better?

As I say most of us don't need it. But some want to print much larger and so it's of use to them.

I definately have no use for 24MP that I can think of, but if it drops the price of the D3 so I can afford to buy a second one to replace the D300 then I'm all for change :D

I getting great results from my D300(s) and D2Hs and I don't want to feel I have to keep spending.....but maybe in a year or two when they have the D6 60MP I'll be able to 'upgrade' to a D3 :) - I'd have to sell too many of my lenses if I went FX.

But that's lenses, it's not really a part of the name of the camera line, e.g. Nikon DX50 would go instead of the current D50 naming-wise.

Well nobody is forcing you to. Nobody says you have to buy the latest kit. I only had one DX format lens ( 10-20mm ) so it was no big deal to me. And you're right the D300 take great photos, I just don't like the feel of it compared to my D3, that's the only reason I'd like to move to having 2 D3's

Gotcha ;)

Dx glass works on the D3:nuts::naughty::thumbs:

If you only want 5MP. Then again, the D2h is only 4MP so it's still an upgrade on that :D

EDIT: Although to correctly put that, some DX lenses will work full frame over some of their zoom ranges.

So does that mean my D200 is an antique! Ah well, doesnt bother me, I know I wont be upgrading for a while!

Was clever thinking by Nikon that was...being able to use Dx format glass on big bodies.

Personally I can't wait for an upgrade to the D3 because then I can buy meself a nice 2nd hand D3 at a nice price :thumbs::thumbs:

But a matter of time before I attain dual citizenship :D

Yes it would be nice for some 2nd hand ones to be going cheap ;)

I have had my fun buying all new kit:razz::razz:

You pay a whack, wait for months to get stock, fix all the bugs with how many versions of firmware and once it works well the upgrade launches:bang::razz::bonk::gag:

I now started buying second hand and suddenly I have money for nice glass too:thumbs:

We're only on the first firmware upgrade on the D300 and D3, admittedly the new D3 firmware is a backstep but hey all part of the fun
