Well, it seems ages ago since I posted about my end of season project and can't believe it's happening this Saturday.

What am I talking about, you might ask?

I'm doing a group photo with a difference. A lot of the rugby clubs do group photos of their members and we wanted to do one but we (or should I say, I) wanted to do one that was slightly different.

I'm painting the letters VIGO RFC onto the pitch and getting everyone to stand so that from above the people are spelling out Vigo RFC. I'm then going 10 metres up and taking the photo........... :suspect: am I mad!?

I've asked you all for advice about the lens (using my 18-55mm) and between husband and I, I think we have the scale drawing right, just got to spray it in large onto the pitch.

Now, I'm asking for advice on how to organise it and asking for your good luck wishes. I haven't got a lot of time to get everyone organised and my thoughts were to get some of the coaches involved with their whistles.

Has anyone else doen a large group shot with about 100 people in before? And if anyone is in the vicinity, do you want to come along?

 Thanks :D

You're going 10 meters up what?

100 people is a lot of folks to get into a group portrait. If you were doing it from eye level then you'd have a serious group to arrange just to get everyone's face in the shot which means tallest at the back etc etc and it can take ages to set up.

I used to sometimes take large wedding groups standing on a short step ladder, so your basic idea in getting higher is sound. Do enlist some aid though to bully and cajole people into getting into position. Keep a nice line between being firm and pleasant and you should do just fine. Sounds like fun. ;)

Kit colours associated with a letter of the word??? i.e if you got green on then you are in 'V' then assign someone on the ground to organise each letter.......

As said get a megaphone and start screaming!!!

Megaphone - that's a good idea. I'm sure I could get hold of one..... thanks

CT - going up in a cherry picker, maximum height 13 m but I reckon 10 would be sufficient....

I'm excited but very nervous. If I sod this up, I'm never going to live it down.

I've planned to do one big main shot then zoom in on each letter and stitch it together. Hopefully that might work.

Everyone's coming in red or black so there might be a problem there! I was just planning on telling everyone to stand in a letter with the mini's and juniors at the front and adults towards the back. I could have a coach on each letter with a whistle. I'm not worried about the kids, they're pretty obedient, it's the adults I'm worried about

ooooh, good luck!!!!!!
:)
remeber to show us the final product

Of course :D

All the best, hope you have a head for hieghts.

As long as it's not as windy as today, I'll be okay (I hope  )

Don't spray, use tape (green?) and tent pegs so you can adjust it.

Instruction for the group "If the person in front of you is taller, move one place forward!"

Unfortunately, we're having to use spray as we need to do it on the pitch and there's two games on it, I have to go and prepare it before the games as there's not a lot of time after them to get it all pegged out so spray was the only option

Good luck! :) Not sure what else I can say.

I'm sure you'll be fine though

Cheers Marcel :)

Do what, shout at people or help? Are you in Kent?

No, I'm not, but I have just the kit to do it (see avatar). Not a lot of use to you: sorry

BTW, I also have a lot of experence of hoists/cherry pickers ~ I have been 60M up in hoists before in my TV days (thats 200 feet) and have undertaken training over the safe use of them. Who is supplying and operating the cherry picker for you?

Good luck with this job Kel - I'm sure it'll be fine but your nerves are more than understandable!

Whatever else you do - make sure that those taking part understand that they should not move until they get a clear instruction from you saying that they can. Maybe get one of the coaches to blow a whistle, so that they all go quiet, then let them know that, when you're finished, that same coach will blow three blasts on that whistle - and that until they hear that you'd appreciate it if everyone could stay in their places. You'll get "drifters" otherwise!

What - you mean you can't fly down the 600 miles for the day :lol::lol::lol:

I've got a company supplying the cherry picker with the engineer coming up with me. No way will I be going up and operating it myself, I'll end up in the trees otherwise

Cheers hun, I've been up the rugby club this evening and it's all everyone is talking about so my nerves have just got worse, they're all very supportive though and have said they will be good for me :suspect: yeah right, we have a touring side coming and champagne starting at 1pm, they'll all be very drunk by the time the photo comes around.......

Blimey, rather you than me! I used to play rugby against Vigo too! So, megaphone, someone on the ground, mobile phone maybe. One other thing which might want to think about if you haven't already is that the letters are going to have to be elongated perhaps to take into account you're perspective - but I guess you've got that covered! Good luck!

This is how F1 used to paint adverts next to the track so they looked correct from the camera POV:

They would set up the camera position and in place of a camera, they would have a very bright light (at night). In front of this light, they would place a gobo of the advert in question. Then they would mark out the advert on the ground, following the gobo's outlines and so it looks correct from the camera's POV.

 Good Luck Kelly, I am sure you will be fine, just keep a long stick handy for any misbehavers!

Thanks :DThey already know the monopod hurts when it hits them, so I could always use that

Spooky - who did you play for? Medway or Old Williamsonians? When did you play? Do you fancy playing again. Training starts for the new season in a couple of months!

What's a gobo? Is it like a stencil type thing? I'm too lazy to wiki or google it  Sounds a good idea though, could have a think about that - thanks

Used to play at Gravesend, but move around a couple of clubs, was a few years ago, must've been about 8 years now. Not sure body would take rugby again, mind is there but not the rest, lol. Good luck for tomorrow, look forward to seeing the shots!

You're only down the road, come up and watch some rugby, we have a touring side playing us so should be a good day out..........

We've been getting the hoses for drinking games ready, just got to buy some funnels....

I know - could be fun :lol::lol::lol:

I presume a trained person is operating the cherry picker, might sound obvious but they rent cherry pickers at work, the guy that delivers them has some fairly frightening stories

make sure it's on solid ground at all times and observe the weight limits and stay safe, no leaning out for the perfect shoooooooot splat

There is a trained person operating it and it's his cherry picker, wouldn't go up otherwise

I'm just getting ready and it's off. Hope the wind and rain stop though :(

Good luck with the shoot!

I did my first group shot last weekend. I was told there was about 150 there but I didn't count! I did have one of the football coaches there blasting on his whistle to get everyone's attention which was a huge help. I didn't have a cherry-picker, just a set of ladders and that was quite high enough for me!

I'm sure we're all looking forward to seeing the results...

:(:'(:'(:(

Didn't happen

Too wet and too windy in Vigo for it to go ahead. Went up this morning in the cherry picker and we marked the ptich but the weather got worse throughout the day

Absolutely gutted :(:'(

Next one is planned already for July - fingers crossed

This time last year we were in shirt sleeves watching the rugby

I'm still feeling quite emotional, 4 months of planning only for the weather to phase us

Gutted....... :'(

Oh Kel! That's such a shame - all your planning too! You're still going to do it though - you just have a little more "planning time" first! :)
