Found Nikon ViewNX2 to be extremely slow so decided to upgrade the RAM from 2 to 8 GB. Looking forward to much better performance but - no difference whatsoever. Then found it wasn't the extra RAM I needed but a faster CPU!

Should have done a bit more research before spending my dosh. A lesson learned.

RAM isn't the magic bullet that a lot of people think it is. Sure, if you have too little RAM then it can choke the system, but if you have just enough to handle what you're working on then increasing the RAM won't make an awful lot of difference.

The processor is the engine of the computer, and as long as you have enough RAM to ensure that the processor has what it needs when it needs it then adding more is not going to make one jot of difference. It's a bit like a car engine in that you can increase the fuel and air flow to ensure that the engine is always operating at its maximum capability, but increasing the fuel and airflow thereafter will not make any difference.

There are many things you can do to improve the perceived performance of a computer, but if you're number crunching, which is effectively what image processing is, then you're, for the most part, at the mercy of the processor.

you probably wont be seeing all of the 8 anyway if you have a 32 bit OS ;)

You can if you create a Ramdisk

I have a 12GB Ramdisk on my i7 PC using XP Pro (32bit) and it really speeds up programs like DVD Shrink.
