TV Tonight BBC 3 22:30 - Paparazzi: Next Generation

I have to say that I loved it when one of them had their foot squashed by a big heavy car. It won't be long until there's a fatal car crash and so long as no one else is involved I would be fine with that. Reckless morons.

I would have thought the police would have a good case against that one at the start taking photos as he drove along with all the evidence captured on camera.

The paparazzi have their uses. As this video proves......

I do love it when people are happy to see someone die! :shake:

I said I was fine with it not happy with it. They endanger other people's lives with the way they drive like absolute morons from A to B, it's just not on. I'd like to go up to London and use my car to block all of these idiots for a few days :D.

Oh I agree, they drive like morons. I still wouldn't be fine or happy to see them dead though.

Sounds like mini cab drivers in London ... thought I was on a tog forum

Just watching now...I love hearing southerners swear, it always sounds so girly :p

I think the bit with the guy chasing Goldie Hawn around summed it up. She looked all annoyed, then went into the hotel, got done up and walked right over to the tog, making sure he got a shot of her.

I have no time for the "celebrity" culture, but the "celebrities" are anything but innocent victims being hounded!

Dave

Well it still seems you like certain celebrities. I see you went out your way to photograph the Liverpool football team.

When I have taken pictures of the Liverpool football team (twice in the last 20 years), I have been documenting and enjoying football history as a fan, I have not been stalking football players as they go along in their normal off the field life for financial gain. I have also not been chasing said football players along a road with no regard for the safety of other road users and pedestrians.

I don't see how that can be the same as paparazzi photographers, but if it is in you mind, then what can I say too that?

Like I said, I try and stay away from the news (have you noticed, it's rarely good news) ;), bit didn't the paparazzi have something to do with Princess Diana's death? I could be wrong, because she was part of the celebrity world which I have no interest in so have been quite successful in not reading anything about it. :)

Don't worry I'm sure sales will go down with the stalkers sticking to Twitter instead .

Well I just watched it and found it pretty interesting. I think its very harsh to be calling them scum. SO many things and people feed the industry thats for sure and while there is a need for the photos there will be plenty of people out taking them. Was amusing seeing the justification, clearly a pap would do anything for some $$$ but i think anyone would perhaps do something for a rediculous amount of cash!

Is that just a one off episode then? Just looked on bbc3 site and can see other schedule times but are they all repeats?

I think you'll find that was down to the drunk french driver.

No its on again next week same channel but at 11.10pm instead.

Ok,

First of all,

I am 20, a guy, originally from Liverpool, moved to London about 18 months ago, because i wanted to be a member of the Paparazzi!

And well here i am, still going and i'm doing very well,

There are a few things i need to say as some of the comments here are disgusting!

Ok, Paps are idiots! Well no, i have 13 GCSE's and 5 A-Levels, turned down a place at Uni to do this,

Paps are scum, such a generalization, doesn't even warrant a reply!

Paps are just glorified celebrity stalkers. This to me, is my job, and yes I LOVE MY JOB, i enjoy going to work every single day. Yes ok, i talk to celebrities, and amazingly, actually get on with some of them, i've given serious celebs a lift when their taxi was late, or lent them some cash for parking, now he's all take take take???

The job is both boring and sad, yes ok, at times when you're staking something out, it can get very boring, but then as soon as it all kicks off, it's the biggest adrenalin rush ever! And i'm sad for doing this job, well, like i said it's just a job, and well the £50k a year plus wages more than makes up for it.

Ryan Essex, one of the photographers featured on the show, he was the guy from Watford who told the other guy to run in front of all other photographers to block their shot. That doesn't normally happen, there are rules and a code, sort of, and since seeing the show, there are a lot of very angry photographers, the only reason the young lad did it, is he was very inexperienced and has been trained by that idiot Essex, so i ask you all please discount everything you saw of him, that's not what we're like.

Simon who got run over by Winehouse's Driver and Lone Ranger Craig Ross, young lad from Birmingham are both friends of mine, and both very nice guys, what you saw of Simon Following Amy Winehouse was only a small part of it, and the craziest part might i add, what wasn't shown was Amy Winehouse buying the lads food from McDonalds, and her laughing and joking around.

The show was created for entertainment purposes only, and shows a limited view of the industry, it's a shame it isn't a series which would have more time to display a more balanced view for everybody to see.

So yes, please feel free to quote me, and question me on all the points i've raised.

And no more stupid comments about Liverpool thanks.

Uhhhmmmm........welcome to TP London Pap :woot:

Thank You Gadgetman,

I come here a lot and view the forums, but this is the first time i've felt so compelled to give a response,

And i hope it changes some serious prejudices!

Good bloody answer's.

And yes, you've hi the nail on the head. To try and create conroversy, they will have shown the most extreme moments.

ISO Images, will have sent the lad infront of the other guys to show off infront of the TV camera's because, lets face it, before that point of the program they were miserable, and not making to much money from the shot they had taken as part of the show.

It's a job that I would not like to do...well full time. No social life, family life etc etc....well that's how it came over to me.

Their equipment and cars took a right beating as well as their blood pressure !!

It did remind me though of the time in 1995 when Richard Gere was in the area filming First Knight. At the time he was married to Cindy Crawford and playing around with Laura (M&S model) Bailey.
I took this shot when I found out where they were filming. He was not too happy when he came over to me. I took it off a narrow country lane so when his bouncer came over for a chat and asked me to destroy the image my reply was a big no.
It was published in the Western Mail for £20:D....happy days

London Pap could we see a good picture of a celeb that you`ve caught by any chance?
doesn`t have to be recent.

Welcome aboard LondonPap, good to see someone working in that sort of environment taking the trouble to post.

You're still going to get the Liverpool comments though :p

are they repeating this programmes or is it on iplayer? i really want to watch it.

Just out of curiosity how do you get into that field?

Have a question. From watching that program, it's pretty clear from a photography point of view, it's not necessarily the most skilful area of photography as you don't have time to compose your picture, ensure exposure is right etc. etc. so you're pretty much relying on technology to handle that side of things. Is that a fair comment?

Do you have an outside interest in photography when you're not stalking celebs? :) I mean, do you have a flickr account or a personal website, or whatever where you vent your more artistic area of photography or are you just not interested in that side of photography? Most pap photographers appear to have some pretty high end photography equipment and so it'd be a shame not to take advantage of that!

It was on iplayer yesterday. might still be there.

Well, i mean it's anything but easy!

However i would agree, you don't have to be a great photographer to be a great pap, although they go hand in hand, i think they require different skills sets.

But where i disagree, if that you do have to worry about exposure and composition etc, my camera is rarely out of manual, however yes there are those who simply pick up a decent DSLR and stick is in Program.

Yes a lot of paps have outside interest, i enjoy fashion, and a lot of other areas too, and yes some of us have high end equipment, i personally use Nikon D3 with VR lens, so not cheap.

There are many amateurs out there, but they tend not to last, either being forced out by other paps through peer pressure etc, or them simply not being good enough to make the grade, it only take a few weeks of bad luck or even less if you don't have skill and you're suddenly in a world of financial difficulty. After all from starting to pap to seeing real money come through typically takes around 3 months, that and spending £10k on a gear to start off.

The Gordon Brown thing was precious, spitting dummy's out cos he didn't look in to the camera, like Brown actually owes this ******** a living or something.

For what it's worth, i don't have a problem with what the Paps do, it's the attitude that seems to have been portrayed by the guys joxby mentioned.

They wanted Gordon Brown to look at them but he wouldn't. I forget the exact phrasing they used, but they then find it funny to submit the photo with a totally fabricated caption along the lines of ' Gordon Brown left the building looking down and miserable, 'obviously' looking like he had the weight of the credit crunch on his shoulders'.

So if he had looked at them and smiled what would he then get?..'Gordon Brown looking Jovial despite the country in recession, 'obviously' Gordon Brown is not finding the credit crunch is affecting him'.

He probably just left the building wondering what was for tea!

As said by others welcome Londonpap....

I have a few questions.

First off what sort of gear do you own and use regular.
You said you have a D3,1/2/3?

Is it as hecktic as is shown on the show.

Obliously the money is good if you can get the shots?
But is it a 365 days a year job with very little time to your self or do you have your days off etc.

You said you have help out celebs?
Have you ever dated any or is that one of the rules too?
You just dont go out with them.?

You also say you are into fashion stuff?
Does this pay the bills too or is it just something you like to do for fun?

Thanks

S

Hi am new to this forum and just wanted to send everyone my greetings.

Now I am one of the 4 people who was featured in the program and would like to try and answer the various questions and thoughts on this matter. Firstly the driving I can see this could be an issue for anyone watching the program but you have to remember the edit that the production company did may not show the truth about what was originally filmed, also I would like to say that all the cars that you see in that follow were all other paps/news photographers involved in the follow and not harmless road users as the program made out. Shooting out of the window is not a usual practice but this one was an Amy winehouse follow and at that time (over a year ago) it was a bit out of control and there was constant pressure from agencies and papers. Also this was done at a roundabout on a trading estate in Bow at about 10mph not off a dual carriageway at 60 like the program again tried to imply not that this makes it acceptable.

Secondly there are various different people who are paps in London some always wanted to be photographers, some just fell into it and some saw a program and picked up a camera. I was previously a local newspaper photographer who attended and passed the NCTJ in Sheffield and had been working for local newspapers from the age of 15. At the age of 19 I decided I had had enough of doing 12 cheque presentations a day and getting one job that pushed my photography skills a month so i started looking into getting to a news agency in London. Now this is easier said than done try earning enough to live in London and work for an agency that your pictures are regularly published in national papers and mags not that easy and the pap world is a good way to get your foot in the door and make some excellent contacts.

Finally technical skill involved in the day to day paps life is not hard but you put a studio snapper out on the street with 10 paps and I guarantee he will miss the photograph and he may have the best exposure, sharpest and nicest composed picture but the celeb will already be in their car while he is setting this up and those 10 paps will have their shots and will be the ones getting the pics in the papers. Also there is an unseen skill the patience, the balls and the anticipation of a situation I know guys who are technically woeful but they have the best personality in the world and can get a personally security guard to put their job in jeopardy for a few quid because they have sweet talked them, alot of people can learn technical skills but you can't teach some of the skills those guys have out there and thats a big part of the job because doesn't matter how good your technical skill is if you can't find a celeb to take a pic of it your not gonna make any money.

Any comments positive or negative would love to hear them anyone who wants to be abusive we'll have a portfolio off and see who comes out on top
