Unsurprisingly, the BBC has had its worst Christmas ratings, ever. When you look at what's on you can see why. Repeats of repeats. In one thread someone wittily, said he'd found a 1980 copy of the Christmas period Radio/ TV times and the same shows were. on. Eg Morecambe and Wise.. Fawlty Towers is on BBC2 tonight. Dad's Army was on at 5.30pm followed by "Keeping Up Appearances " Unforgiven"'..a 1992 film is on BBC2 at 9.00pm. No "Two Ronnies" this year.

Not just the BBC....This is what Channel4 was showing this morning. 0815, The American sitcom.."Frasier' followed by 'The Simpsons' and then..' Four in a bed" with different repeat episodes at...11.50.....1220....1.25pm. and 1.55pm. Next. a repeat of, "A Place in the Sun'.

So..I've found a programme on Channel4 this evening at 8.05 that, isn't listed as a repeat and would be worth watching for the scenery . It's called "Nordic Train Christmas"

I thought about posting it as a 'heads-up' but tbh when I've done that in the past the programme has turned out to be disappointing. I don't think this one will be,though. My wife is working her magic on me to get us on a. 'fiords' cruise.

Regular TV, including all sky/satellite channels, is dire, full of repeats and old content. For Heavens sake, we are still getting movies from the 1950's and 1960's as peak viewing every major holiday (Sound of Music, Zulu, Mary Poppins, etc). Mind you, the old peak time weekend variety shows were at least entertaining (Morecambe & Wise, etc). Now all you get is game shows, reality shows, celebrity show us your skid marks, etc. Cheap, tawdry and lowest common denominator rubbish. Soaps are all full of nasty stuff, no longer light entertainment. No decent sitcoms. So we are watching old box sets of sitcoms and dramas, then going to bed early to read (isn't getting older wonderful).

I got rid of Sky TV a couple years back [I still use their broadband] and never looked back. Anything our girls ever wanted to watch could be had via streaming - Netflix, Prime, Virgn/RTE players, not once have they ever requested the over dose of crappy UK/Irl tv stations back. This year we added Disney+, but that might be gone end of the month as there's nothing special about it really. I do not miss 'standard' tv year round, let alone at Christmas.

Buried in that article is the fact that of the top ten programmes, nine were on the BBC. So commercial television is clearly soaring ahead and what everyone wants on that basis. Or not.

However there has been little on. I would of have watched Unforgiven this evening as it is a truly great film, but want an early night.

That's confused me tbh. I must be misunderstanding what you've said. The top ten programmes were on the BBC....,then you say that commercial TV is clearly soaring and what everyone wants........[or not].

Unforgiven. Top rate actors, I see but sounds pretty violent. I like watching life's dross being 'eliminated'..the Dirty Harry, Magnum Force and Death Wish films but not the likes of Straw Dogs ..gratuitous violence and rape and films about Charles Manson.

I got rid of Sky Sports earlier this year, but stupidly agreed to a reduced price deal on the Signature package..... Starting to think I should have cancelled the whole lot as most of the stuff I watch nowadays are on the Freeview/Freesat channels.

The only sport I have any real interest in is Rugby League, and really enjoy watching NRL matches from Australia and Sky only show 3 NRL matches a week.... I've now got a subscription that allows me to stream every match in every round and it costs me a lot less than what Sky Sports was costing me.

Some time ago there were three channels. Material was created for them. They got millions of viewers.

Now there several hundred channels, maybe more. But there hasn’t been the same explosion in numbers of viewers.

Creating 4k material costs a lot of money. Per minute, way more than 625 lines cost in b&w.

Chalk and cheese.

I/we rarely watch BBC, ITV, C4 or C5 and haven't for some time. There are a few things we watch, the odd footie match plus I like The Apprentice and Who dares wins and we both like the pottery competition. I've stopped listening to BBC radio and I avoid the news on the traditional channels and only look at the BBC web site for the sporting results.

The lack of decent programming, the moralising and nudge aspects and the abscence of funny comedy shows is one thing but a more serious issue is IMO the news coverage, the fake news, the bias and the stories they don't or perhaps wont cover. All that is IMO a much greater issue. I/we get our news from several other sourses, our movies, entertainment and documentaries and most of our sport from Virgin. Youtube and the wider internet. At the moment Mrs WW is understandably following the Thai / Cambodia conflict pretty much 24/7 on line.

I enjoyed my Christmas evening viewing, Wallace and Gromit, Dr who and program about steam trains in the war years.... all on YouTube.
I looked at the tv offerings and didnt turn it on. The Dr Who was a fan film and better than the woke trash the Beeb passes off as Dr Who, better acting (not difficult) better scripts and no agenda. Wallace and gromit was an old one but so was everything on telly.
They've got a cheak asking for a licence every year when most of what they show is decades old.

I honestly can't remember the last time I actually switched the living room TV on to watch something. I would guess we are talking a couple of years, easily.

I'll sometimes find it on when the grandkids come around, and I think my son switched it on to watch a big rugby match when he came around for tea quite a while ago. But with just the two of us, it can be left off for weeks at a time.

got a huge amount of downloaded box set type stuff over at GC
me an wife have watched untamed season quite good , new robin hood also, slow horses , landman s02 and currently on to Pluribus

As much as we decry all these repeats, where are the new comedies to replace them. The fact is, I have not seen anything as funny as Faulty Towers, Dad's Army, Black Adder or Rising Damp etc. As other have said, Reality TV shows are boring and Celebrity version of successful show like The Apprentice or Master Chef do not work. To be fair to the programme makers PC restrictions would not permit them to make the shows listed in my first sentence.

We just watched films and some shows from the streaming platforms, including catching up on celebrity race across the world on BBCi Player. We’re just not watching live - unless it’s sport

Viewing figures are almost going to be lower each year from now - last year was maybe different because of the Gavin and Stacy finale.
