Looking at a new TV, currently have a Sony Bravia 40" which we got 11 years ago and has been faultless. So much choice out there and lots of different models that seem very close. Ideally looking at around £500 so have shortlisted the following:

The last one seems identical to the other Samsung one, just 5" smaller but £100 cheaper. Anything better out there for that money?

Also I have a sony surround sound system which I am looking to ditch. Don't really need the rear speakers and want to cut down on clutter so looking at soundbars. Is it essential to have a separate subwoofer or will the built in ones be ok. While the system we have is good for some things, most of what we watch is normal TV and not loads of the latest films.
 
See if John Lewis do what you want as you usually get more warranty with JL.

DONT USE CURRYS OR ANY OF THE DG GROUP

Costco have a nice 55 in Sony for 839.00 on offer with 5 year warranty, bought one and very happy with it...YOUVIEW is a little slow on the take up but works flawless once started, but I dont use that app anyway. Like it ...

LG do decent mid price UHD HDR TV's we bought one earlier this year for about the money your taking about. Also bought a LG soundbar with separate subwoofer for £170 but not convinced with it.

Thats about £300 above his budget

Normally I buy electronics's from John Lewis, for the extra warranty as they price match.

Look at the LG 49" 810v, currently £579 @ currys. Excellent picture, Dolby Vision HDR, HK Audio etc..

If £500 is your limit then the LG 701v (£499 @ Currys) is also pretty good.

The Samsung's are also very good, but I can't really comment on them as my experience is with the LG's.

Why?
 
Richer Sounds usually have what you want in stock, John Lewis usually don't and it's a PITA having to go back into town to pick the thing up or to wait in for a non specific delivery time.
 
Richer sounds is good too and have sampled their customer service that was good too! and just saw their 6 year warranty!!

Totally forgot about Richer Sounds, bought there in the past so popped in yesterday and went for the 49" Samsung 6400 for £519. Just got to decide on the soundbar now as the one I wanted was not in stock.
 
My dad bought a £900 Sony this Christmas. It is a POS. Looks like a TN panel with horrid viewing angles and darkened top corners. As a monitor this would be unacceptable by 2006 standards. I would return that crap if I was him.
Standard TV low def looks unwatchable. HD is reasonable...

From all I can gather it must be IPS or ideally OLED. All the other letters and "features" don't matter all that much.
 
I've mainly bought audio visual stuff from Richer Sounds but I've always found them willing to do a deal. The speakers set I bought just before Christmas added up to £600 which I said was more than I had budgeted for so the salesman immediately knocked £40 off.

Setting up is key and takes time. Have spent a while playing with settings as out of the box it was far too bright and vivid for my liking. Now I have it pretty much bang on.
 
Up until recently we had two Samsung LED TV's. Quite happy with both though smart TV stuff always seemed quite slow so rarely got used. Then a few months ago, our darling toddler poured a whole cup of water down the back of one of them and ended its life prematurely (the TV not the child!). Ended up replacing it with 4k LG. It's really nice but the biggest difference is that the Smart TV stuff is really slick compared to the samsung to the point it now gets used a lot rather than ignored. This is all a bit anecdotal of course and Samsung stuff might be much quicker these days, but would be worth playing around with that side of things in a shop as - to me at least - it makes a much bigger difference than absolute picture quality or sound output.
