I have done a forum search and looked through the user manual, but I have not found the answer to my question. My question is, is it possible to turn off the LCD screen on the Nikon D60? I know it is possible to turn off the screen briefly using the button on the bottom left, but it comes back on again when using the camera. What I want to do is totally disable it, and just use the viewfinder for info ;)

Jon,

This might not be relevant but I'm pretty sure (well vaguely uncertain) that when I had my D40 - similar camera - half pressing the shutter release button turned the rear screen off and it didn't come back on until after I'd taken a shot even if I released the button again.

Might be worth a try :)

Hiya Steve

Thanks for the reply the only time the screen goes off, is when I put the camera up to my eye and after a short while without touching any buttons. But I want to totally disable it, not sure if this is possible! It's just of an evening I don't want the camera to keep lighting up, as this draws attention. I may just make a little cover for the screen, thanks anyway :)

Don't mean to pry but why do you want the screen switching off?

Because when I am out with the camera of an evening, when it lights up I don't want to draw attention to myself. I would like to go about un noticed, if possible. Plus the glare does dazzle my eyes slightly of an evening, I can get any info from the viewfinder.

But I am not sure if the screen can be turned off, I did read the manual but found nothing about turning it off

Not sure if nikon can do this, but my canon has a choice of colours and one is black/green. Which is very discrete.

Hi yes I have just had a go at what you suggested, and while it did tone it down a little, still prefer to be turned off. I will just turn down the brightness and plod along with it :)

Isn't this down to the fact that there's no top LCD so the camera has to show it externally somehow? Obviously, it senses when the camera is brought to the users eye, as it turns off then, but can you set the monitor timer to something like 2s before it sleeps/goes off?

yes but I can get that info via the view finder, just annoys me when screen lights up thats all.

Or could you cover the sensor so it thinks its at your eye? Can't remember where is was unfortunately but if it's external and not through the viewfinder, a bit of tape would do it.
Yes it is just below the view finder, I could stick a little bit of tape I suppose, it would be great if it could be simply turned off tho :(
