Just got my D200 and a SB900, so fooled the other half into going for a nice stroll to Arthurs Seat so I could work out all I had read in Joes latest book!

Its difficult to come up with how you want to light people so I decided that I would gel two flashes either side and use them to light her face.

I am not sure if this is the right approach considering the sun which was high to camera left.

Here are a couple of the shots, bare flash and gelled cto.

C and C welcome on any part of the shot ( I know I am in most of them:thumbsdown:)

good background separation on the first pic, didnt like the bit of grass
last pic, think power could have been turn down alittle so it balance up light to match the other side of her face

Thanks for that, I could not decide whether I liked that separation as it looked a little fake.

Exposure on the first shot is spot-on IMO; the second one is hot on the sun side of her face. You could have upped the flash by a stop or so and dialled down a half stop in the camera to avoid overexposure down her face. The last one is good, maybe a third stop under exposed from the flash but nonetheless fine.

Outdoor flash is one of those things that I find sometimes just works when you least expect it, maybe when you change angle or choose a different backdrop. A lot of the time it's all about not whether it's 'right' but whether it looks right for what you were trying to achieve

Number 1 for me :) nice comp and exposure looks good, except for the shadow on the left cheek which looks a bit harsh IMO. Maybe if you had a shoot through brolly to diffuse that side?. Good effort.
