Currently i am down to just my Tamron 17-50 and my nifty for the time being. And have funds for a new lens, not in a hurry and can get the 24-70 if i save up for another month, which is not a problem.

The choices i have narrowed down to are

Canon 10-22
Canon 24-70

tbh, if i get the Canon 24-70 i will probably sell the 17-50 as there is too much overlap. What i am concern about is the Canon 10-22 is a bit on the crap side.

Looking at PTON's archive thread for pics taken from the 2 above lenses. It must be the photographer (I think) but most of them doesn't seem that impressive, the colours are crap, the contrast is crap, and the landscape doesn't seem that "wide" hence not that impressive. It feels i can do that already with a 17-50 (i know i can't) but it just doesn't look that much wider to me.

Another thing is that a lot of people use it to take landscape shots (which is logical) but it seems like waste to me, whats wrong with using it to take some quirky candids ?

Where the 24-70 has a huge range of shots in their archive thread and if i were to judge on the photos alone and nothing else and pick the lens i'd buy from that. I pick the 24-70 everytime.

But i am also thinking, it can't be the photographer.....not over like 50 pages of posts (the thread has almost 100 pages for the 10-22), surely on the balance of statistic, the quality of the photographer would be the same across the 2 archive threads. But looking at it i can't help that the 24-70 is just a much much more awesome lens.

serch for the thread titled 'show me your sigma 10-20mm shots!!' or something like that. its not the canon, but would if anything be slightly worse quality, yet there were some really really cracking shots on that topic,

Well, the 24-70 is a more expensive, and more 'pro' level lens, so generally is bought by people more serious about their 'togging. The 10-22 (or 10-20) is the basic affordable ultra-wide that everyone and their dog buys. So it could partly be the photographers you're looking at.

Having owned Canon's 10-22 for over a year now, and borrowed a 24-70 on a few occasions, the 24-70 is clearly the better lens. But they are very different lenses. I'll be buying my own 24-70 as soon as I get the cash.

That said, IMO the 10-22 is a very capable piece of glass, and produces much better results than any of the several Sigma 10-20s a few of my mates use.

So, without rambling on too much, yes I'd say the 24-70 is the 'better' lens, but if you want to take a shot below 24mm then the 10-22 is gonna beat it every time of course.

Oh, and I rarely use my 10-22 for landscapes anymore, more for gigs and a bit of street stuff now and then.

Jamie.

I had the sigma 10-20 and sold it as I barely used the wide part, I found it was just too wide for my useage. I now have the 24-70 and love it, very rarely leaves the camera. It depends on your style and if you need the extra. I ran a utility called exposureplot (http://www.vandel.nl) on my archive and found most photos were taken from 20 upwards so my plans changed, I will get a 17-40 to cover the lower gap or possibly when I have more experience I may go back to a 10-20, for the moment I do not have a use for it.

Also I find the 2.8 on the 24-70 comes in very handy a lot of the time for indoors, so definitly worth having.

I have both these lenses and common sense would tell you that you are going to use the 24-70 more than the 10-22 as it's more of a mid range lens. I also have an old 17-55 that I have used for the odd wide angle shot but there is a vast difference in angle achievement between 17mm and 10mm.

It's not just for landscape shots! :D

Regarding quality, both these lenses are superb and very sharp. they also have the added bonus that they have the same filter size.

I would get the 24-70mm first and then set the 10-22mm in my sights!

Try this link - www.the-digital-picture.com - There is a comprehensive review on both and there are sample shots.
When I had my 10-22 I found it almost as good as an L lens. I have the 24-70L and there is no doubt it is excellent but obviously not anywhere near as wide, it depends what you want to shoot.#

i have recently bought a 24-70L and although theres no doubt that its a fantastic lens and maybe the sharpest i've used, i still fins myself wanting something a little wider.... after reading several reviews the 10-22mm is definitely the next lens on my shopping list...

I love the canon 24-70L and can tell it apart from the sigma version. The bokeh is wonderful and I wish I could fit one to my D300. Great lens.

I'm going to be purchasing a 24-70 L at the end of this month after all the great reviews I've read. Hopefully should compliment my new 40D quite nicely! :-) Will then look for something for the lower end of the scale possibly the 10-20 Sigma.....but defo going for the L glass first!
