For some reason I thought about doing this last night. This is my first time using a flash (Neewer TT 560 Speedlight) at night in the garden, seemed like a good idea at the time, I did 2 versions of the same image !colour and 1 black and white to see how they compare. Dont be to brutal about them lol. Taken with an Olympus EM1 mk1 and the 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 kit lens at 25mm, f5.6, iso 200 and 1/8 sec

I'm not going to be brutal at all! I think they're fine. It would be nicer (in my opinion) if the plant was contained within the image, i.e. black all along the sides, as it is at the top. I prefer the B&W image - but that's just because I like B&W generally.

Thank you for the critique, the reason it is so tight on the sides is to cut out the ugly roof tops on each side lol. But i will try and remember to leave a bit more room on images in future.

I agree with Boots' comments, and prefer the B&W because in an image like this, the colour distracts from the contrast and texture of the composition./subject. As a first effort, it's a good start. You can develop on the composition and white (black) space around the subject. The light from the flash is clearly not reaching the upper parts of the plant as much as the lower, but that is just experimentation in positioning it.

If the camera is a a tripod you can set a longer exposure time, hand hold the flash on a relatively lower power output and fire a number of times to "Light paint" the the areas you want to highlight. I prefer the mono version but it is obvious by the highlights that the flash is on camera axis.

well done with the above. You can get some amazing shots at night.
