I've had Trusteer Rapport running on my computer which was recommended by RBS online banking, never had a problem with it and it was set to automatinc updates.

Spotted something new in my start menu this morning (not been in it for a few days) Trusteer Endpoint Console, a sort of start/stop option.

Hopefully this is something new and not sinister that's been installed unknowingly. Anyone else using Rapport have this new start/stop console appearing?

I like to choose my own protection, not those from a bank.

Care to share any good alternatives?

I already use Avast internet security, Malwarebytes (free version) and spybot.
I do notice Rapport takes up quite a chunk of memory for itself. :(

My bank also asks me to download this - I always decline. This thread has pushed me to do some googling. You might like to read:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trusteer

and also:

http://techreport.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=80688

which basically says it is the equivalent of a rootkit as it takes over the Windows APIs. It also appears to be relatively easily beaten. Someone, somewhere, will write something that exploits that and will target it specifically as it is designed to communicate sensitive data to your bank.

Common sense and what you already have installed.

My bank continually try to push Trusteer Rapport on me, I prefer to use my own common sense to look after myself.

nasty software, caused issues with my mac (can't remember specifically but somewhere along the lines of pages not opening or apps not even loading). They are 32bit kernel extensions and that is really bad for 64bit system

This is all very well, but I am constantly dismayed by the average level of computer users and for them it is likely a good thing.
The typical machine I look at has various things popping up and knagging about updates or whatever - and the users just repeatedly dismiss them because they don't know what it's about.

Until it cripples the machine.

We may disagree, but for these people ipad is the only way forward. 100% control by Apple so nothing can go wrong (well almost)
