im not too sure if im right in thinking but i have a nikon d70s body and i use a nifty 50 with it,

Does the d70 have a cropped sensor (i think it does) and if so what is the true length(ish) of the 50mm?

also im looking to get a wider prime any suggestions?

cheers

rik

All Nikon DSLRs have a 1.5x crop factor, with the exception of the D3.

As for an alternative prime, have a look at the Sigma 30f1.4 .. it's supposed to be one hell of a great prime.

It has a true length of 50mm no matter what size your sensor is. It's a 50mm lens.

The sensor in your d70 will capture a smaller 'crop' of the same image as seen by a full frame or 35mm film. That 'crop' will roughly make it look like you used a 75mm lens (1.5 crop factor), though you won't have quite the same perspective as you would get from a 75mm lens on a full frame camera.

The whole "35mm equivalent focal length" thing is annoying me now;)

A 50mm lens IS a 50mm lens, as my esteemed fellow member above states. If you put a 50mm lens on a 35mm SLR, or Full-Frame DSLR, it will merely have a different angle-of-view to a DSLR with a cropped sensor. It's still a 50mm lens!

On your D70s, a 50mm lens would give the same angle-of-view as an 80mm lens would on a 35mm film SLR, or full-frame DSLR. That's the 1.6* conversion factor:)

I'm not Nikon literate but I believe you should be using a 1.5x conversion and hence 50mm is the equivalent AOV of 75mm lens on a 35mmFF body....as stated by Eau Rouge above.

I agree on the 50mm lens is the same irrespective of the body it's used with; but how is it an 80mm on a DSLR, and why is the crop factor at 1.6 and not 1.5?!

thanx for the correction of terminoligy but im sure you all knew what i was getting at :) thats cleared up some questions for me so thanx

Yes, but isn't the Nikon sensor crop a 1.5 factor?!

1.5, 1.6, who really cares ;)

The point is, that it doesn't matter. :bang:

UNLESS (yup, an "unless"!!) you're coming from a 35mm film background, where you know what field of view to expect from a certain focal length of lens. If you've never been near a film SLR in your life, it's simply DOESN'T MATTER!!!!!

Well it does matter to a Nikon user. If he puts the lens on a D3 he'll get a wider field of view than on his D70.
