trouble with a doorway photo

hello please can anyone advise me on where I am going wrong with this. I have taken lots of the same shots and the aim is to try and get as much detail of the couple in the doorway as possible (not this couple as it happens but they were kind enough to stand and pose quickly for me to test it out!). The problem is I either get the couple nice and clear but the background is over exposed or I get the background and the couple are silhouetted. Is it possible to have both for a nice shot? or am I trying to achieve the impossible?

by the way, composition etc is not an issue for these test shots - I was purely trying to get the right exposure.
 
well, I used my flash gun and ended up with shockingly bright images. I just wanted it to look softer. am forgetting to do something really thick?!

thanks for quick replys. on the plus side I am getting much better skies now than in my previous photos.

Expose the background correctly and use fill flash.

Like Tigger says, set your exposure as per you second example so the outside world is correctly exposed, then hope your flash is powerful enough to expose the people.
 
have you had a read about metering??
you can only measure so much variation in light on a camera.
therefore you can underexpose the foreground or over expose the light coming through the doorway.
flash as has been said, what about a diffuser or bounce it off the ceiling
 
ok, thanks everyone. I will try the diffuser. theres a lot of reflective glass cabinets around and the ceiling is quite high so not sure about that but I will of course give it all a go
