Hello, I have been contemplating visiting Tromso for a photography holiday for winter landscapes and of course the northern lights. Does any know or recommend a good tour company or a good package that includes photography? I will be travelling solo so the idea of it all being organised for me is appealing.

I followed Guide Gunnar last year December. Pretty good experience. The tour maximum participation is just about 14 people and he states that the tour is designed for those who wants to take photograph. So basically you can get access to those more remote places as he is driving a van/mini bus rather than those bus that carries 30-40 people.

I did 2 tours with him. The first night the weather was pretty bad but he still drove all the way to Finland border and we did actually see about 1-2 minutes of NL. And the second night the weather was really good and he drove straight to a base which he knows pretty well which is just along the coast. I spent about 3-4 hours there taking photos.

Try to see whether you can get the Aurora dinner package if possible. Quite a unique experience having dinner under NL. But then, make sure you have your dinner quickly so that you won't miss out taking shot of NL.

Thank you for your reply.

Has anyone used a company called "Aurora Zone".

When are you planning to go? I'm planning to go next year, so will be interested to see what other replies you get on packages etc.

I was looking to go early 2015 but that is looking unlikely now. Just can't be able to find any packages.

me and my wife were thinking early 2015 too (still haven't had much chance to look into it in detail yet tho either), its a nightmare to work out though (trying to plan for clear weather, not totally freezing, some snow on the ground being there and looking at what other activities would be there when not trying to find the aurora! Would certainly be easier if all done for me. I imagine for me, will probably end up having to figure out a plan on my own without a guide etc but if i come across anything i'll update in here

No a change in financial circumstance means i can not justify the cost :( it will happen in the future though so that link will come in handy so thank you

Have you booked yet?!? I've been following these chaps on FB for quite a while and they seem to be excellent http://www.arcticguideservice.com/

We went last year and I wrote this guide for people thinking of going to shoot the NL. http://squashimagery.wordpress.com/2014/01/10/a-guide-to-photographing-the-northern-lights-in-tromso-norway/

We found the arctic guide service next door to our hotel and they have a centre to go and speak to them. They were very helpful even tho we never went on a tour with them. They do have a large coach however. The cost of tours isn't cheap so we hired a car and basically went where we wanted having found out all the spots to go to.

Let me know if you'd like further info.

Excellent guide Rich! Looks like all accommodation is booked up for this Feb so will go next year :(

A chap from Tromso is great to follow, as he has found some awesome locations (most of them marked on the map, and he is very happy to answer questions!)
