I'm looking to squander the family food budget on some nice shiny glass
I want to stick with L glass, but I have a question
I know that some of the zooms and/or primes use trombone style focus/zoom and some use rotation
How do you tell which does what?
(I have something against trombones btw!)

thanks for your help, peeps!

the easy way to tell is to look at the image of them on the web. You'll be able to see from the way the grip is moulded. Check the 100-400 against the 70-200 and you'll see what I'm failing to explain :)

The 100-400. Is a push pull job and the 70-200 a rotary zoom.

Hope that helps a little

What is the difference between the 2? what difference does it make to pics?? cos i have no idea what your talking about

The 100-400L is push/pull and I really like it- it's very fast to zoom in use, and no mistaking which way to rotate the zoom collar in the heat of the moment as can be the case with the rotary type.

look at the hand grip on the zoom collar, the rotary types have lines that run length ways along the collar, the pull types grips go around the collar.

:) I guess it's a religious thing Canon/Nikon trombone/twist

I see what you say, but do worry about dust. Has it been a problem for you?
