My AVG antivirus scan has shown lots of threats.. mostly trojan backdoors... and they are all located in docs&settings\owner\local settings\application data\Ares\My shared folder\ and its loads and loads of applications ii am supposed to have downloaded but havent and have never even heard of.

If I browse thru to this folder ... there is nothing in it... even if I "show hidden files and folders".

What the devil is going on?

Do you use Ares regularly?? I know from experience that it's full of virus's.

I've stopped using it completely now.

I dont use it often at all. but how come it says the trojans are in files that dont exist and have never been downloaded?

Have you allowed any young relatives on your computer?.
I don't suppose you have been accessing any free smiley sites, a possible source.

well my teenage sons come on here very occasionally but under a username of KIDS... and the trojans are all under user. there are no such files downloaded anywhere on the pc.. its weird.

If they're teenage sons, I'd be less worried about Smiley sites.....:nuts::lol:

Could they be from a trojan downloader???

there are 1273 so far..... infected files and downloads that i cant find anywhere on my pc

How bizarre. I had a problem fairly recently with lots (but not that many) of Trojan Backdoors. I uninstalled AVG and installed AVAST instead. I also had to uninstall and reinstall my internet as it all went down the pan and I couldn't connect to lots of sites. All fixed now though - touch wood!

A fairly common problem with AVG.

I use Avast! and it's far better than Norton & McAphee IMO

what is the shared folder sharing with?

Hi Janice,

Might be a silly question and don't want to imply you're daft but did AVG clear them or quarantine them before you looked?

If not, can AVG remove them succesfully?

AVG has removed them now. thanks. I have just put spybot search & destroy in and that is finding a lot of stuff too.

Hopefully when its gone.. it wont come back!!

My fault I guess... i uninstalled AVG after going mad at it taking 5 hrs every evening to scan and it was making the pc go slow when I wanted to photoshop!!

But after my artist's strop... I forgot to reinstall it.. so have been running without an antivirus for a couple of weeks or so. :bang:

I'm not a fan of having shared folders on my pc as it can leave them open for these types of viruses and trojans.

Glad it's all sorted now though and spybot does a great job too.

Steve

Have you tried AVAST? Free, and much better than AVG imo :)

I would suggest running Spybor or similar.

Spybot will tell you what the Trojan/Virus etc is & sometimes explains
how to remove it.

I had one recently called 'smitfraud-c' which affects your registry &
fills your machine with rubbish telling you that you have a virus & the
only way to get rid of it is to download a virus scanner for around
£20.

Of course you have no virus but novice users may take the bait.

Another method is to find the Virus/trojan name & search for removal
tools on Google or the Symantec site.

Never had any problems with AVG apart from the 'go slow' when its scanning!

You can change your options on AVG to stop it scanning everytime you boot up. It kept doing the same with mine so I just changed it to weekly (although I probably only let the full scan run every couple of weeks because it makes my computer go slow too).

I did use Search & Destroy as well but since I've installed AVG 8.0 there have been no detections with S&D so I've stopped using it completely (for now...)
