Im really needing to get my own tripod. Im currently borrowing one from my college, and its a paid having to sign them out all the time.

I had a look, and wow theres a lot out there! Any suggestions on what brand to go for, or even what exact tripod to go for? Iv got about £100 to spend, can maybe stretch a bit further for the right one!

Try Redsnapper. The advert is at the bottom of home page. AND you get a TP member discount!

I cannot tell the difference between the £100 Giottos/Manfrottos I looked at and my RedSnapper apart from the fact for £100 you get a very nice Ballhead with RS instead of the 3-Ways usually supplied with the alternatives.
Personally after the service I receieved from Joe and the quality of the item I would recommend Red Snapper to anyone.

Whichever brand you choose, the only advice I'd give is to not compromise. Spend as much as you can, plus a bit more.

If you go for a light and cheap one, you're only going to replace it with something heavier later on. Get a decent one now and save yourself the hassle and expense of replacing a budget one later. It's not like a tripod is going to become obselete in a few years. Buy the best one you possibly can and it'll last longer than the rest of your gear combined!

I went for the Manfrotto 055XPROB legs and the 804RC2 head. I'm absolutely loving it. It's a fair old weight to carry about but well worth it and will last forever.

George.

I originally wanted the 055XPROB legs, mainly as the centre column swings to horizontal. The whole package with bag and head was too far out of my price range though :(

Top brand, in budget and a respected retailer. What more could you ask for?
At this kind of price you can’t go wrong. They also have the bigger version, the 055 with the “joystick” head but it’s over you price range at £139.

Badger lover is quite right when he says get the best one you stretch too. Eventually you will upgrade the better the one you start with the longer before you out grow it and therefore the better value it is.

Which model is it your borrowing from college

Manfrotto are doing some deals at moment for tripods + head ( I think Giottos are also advertising some offers)

my giottos was around £100 and its perfect for me!

each leg can adjust the angle, to near enough horizontal for low shows, the centre bit comes out and replaces with a small bit so the camera head is mounted as low as possible, also the centre bit comes out and can tilt up to 90degree for them arkward tripod shots. Head is great quality to. has 3 or 4 spirit levels dotted about to

Another vote for Redsnapper, excellent quality product & comes complete with a very commfortable bag :)

and it has twice the load capacity of the Giottos linked on this page ;)

i am waiting for my redsnapper to arrive. Should be here tomorrow hopefully.

I was considering manfrotto, decided to go with the redsnapper since it's £50 cheaper and comes with a bag.

Can anybody tell me the advantages of a ball head over a three way? Am eyeing up the Redslappers, and wonder if it's worth the extra for the ball head...

Think you might have a little typo there..

Ball heads are much more compact and less cumbersome to use. But a three-way head is more useful if you need to adjust horizontal and vertical axis independently, for pano shots i assume this is useful.

But there you go im no expert, just wanted to point out the typo really :naughty:

The typo was intentional; twas a gag! A purile one, but a gag nonetheless :naughty:

Ah, I see; only having used a three way before, I've yet to understand the advantages of a ball.

Just gone for the Rednanpper 283 Tripod and RSH-528 3-Way Head Kit, can't wait to get it!

Fantastic price espcially when it comes with the bag as well

I had a play with some Manfrotto legs (055 I think), then put a silly bid on a new pair of redsnapper legs & ended up winning them :D

I can't really tell the difference between them to be honest. Have to say the bag is worth at least a tenner on its own!

With the Giotto at that price, what would people opt for? I'd always assumed the Redsnapper ran away with recommendations at the sub-£100 range but seeing the Giotto at that price tempts me to go for that.

Been looking for a new better tripod and Oh what a dilema, so many to choose from but with the help of all the advice from this thread I eventually opted for the Giottos 9351 and I got it from Jessops

With me living in Guernsey I got it for £86 (we donot pay VAT over here)

Ok delivery was £8 but worth it.

I'm in the hunt for a tripod and a mono pod and in a similar boat that I am currently borrowing a cullmann which is quite light compared to some of the modern ones I have handled I am hoping to get one of the 2 items as a christmas present so am thinking carbon fiber manfrotto either the 055CX Pro3 or the 190CX PRO3 the 190 is shorter and a lot lighter I think I need to measure how tall I need it to be. I would prefer the lighter of the 2 really. The head I am thinking about is the MG460 again for its light weight.

But is light weight a good thing or not?

Me personally would not go for light wieght.

I was looking today at tripods and the one i have is light wieght and when last out the slightest bit of breeze made it unstable.

My wife said to me today as I mentioned about wieght and she said are you planning any 10 mile hikes with it?? I said no not really but will walk with it, so she said but if its got a strop on it then surley it will be light over your shoulder.

Ok women are so good at common sence, I am a builder and when i think of the tripods for dumpy levels and theodolites they are well sturdy and heavy for a reason, so the donot blow around in the wind and keep the meauring equipment stable.

I supose carbon ones are great for indoors and moving around but in the real world would they be any good in say the middle of a field or around a lake etc etc etc.

Just my 2 cents

Just to jump in with my question, but I feel it's relevant to the original question:

What about tripods for travelling with though, when it comes to weight? When I went to Norway recently, I took an old Jessops tripod that has a retracted length of 41 cm and weighs about 1kg. The head only tilts one way though, and you have to turn the camera on the head for a vertical shot.

Are there any decent light-ish tripods, no more than about 45cm and therefore suitable as hand baggage on a flight, that would offer a decent compromise. I don't think I'd want to spend more than £100.

Edit: The maximum weight I would have on it would be my 450D plus 70-300IS Canon zoom. Something like this http://www.velbon.co.uk/newvelbon/pages/ultramaxil.html would fit the weight/height/length bill, but would it be suitable?

Don't forget TP members discount too :)

Hello, sorry to bring up an old thread. I've just started the hunt for a proper tripod after putting up with my Ambico McTripod for long enough. I hadn't heard of the Redsnapper until this thread and I think it's made my mind up to get the RS-283 and RSH-12 Ball Head.

I know I've not been a member here long so I'm not sure whether this applies to me but how does the TP member discount work?

Cheers
Matt

I recieved my RH-12 and RS2-83 and I'm over the moon with it. Feels much sturdier than the 055 and 190. And higher quality. Slightly heavier than the 190. Not really noictable over the 055. Includes a bag. The head is very neat and smooth. I'm using the included short cnetre column. Easy to set up low. Highly recommended. Great service.

This is the only page you need to read about tripods:

If you don't have the money to spend, buy a camera bean bag. Someone on this forum sells them through his own website at http://www.camerabeanbags.co.uk/

I have one, and use it more than my carbon fibre Gitzo-clone (£300) with Markins M-20 head (£280).
