Yes
I may be going on a pretty special trip in September :):) ...............and will need a quality tripod and head for landscape work. I will be flying, so weight is an issue, and will also be doing a bit of walking (though not too much ).

I currently have a Giotto....pretty basic and a bit heavy but its ok for here when travelling by car. However, when I went to South Africa, I had to leave behind clothes and shoes(:'():'() to compensate for the weight. The head I have is a Manfrotto 486RC but there is a huge amount of "creep" on it.

So, I'm thinking.....bite the bullet and get all new. What would you landscapers advise?

PS: this is going to be a pretty special "once in a lifetime" trip, so I don't mind spending..............and it will last me the rest of my life ;) I hope!!

The Manfrotto jnr geared head is just sublime to use and unless you can justify the big version, is the best for landscapes that there is. As for legs, the heaviest you can be bothered to carry is the old adage.

If it's for the L&L trip you mentioned in the other thread, and you do go with Charlie, then walking is not going to feature to highly. CW will always be photographic hero of mine but, and I say this with all due respects, I have a dead granny that'll walk further for a shot. ;)

If you were going on a trip with Joe Cornish, David Ward, Ben Osborne or the like..... travel light. :)

Has to be a Gitzo then

They're about £500 but a buy once item. I've learnt the hard way, buying seven times and even a mod (JoeT) thought they were overpriced and unjustifiable, but has since bought one :)

They're absolutely superb and I'm sure you won't regret the investment :woot:

:lol: Yes, it is that one, and I am able to walk about the same distance as that dead granny, so it will suit me fine!

GT3531 or GT3541, if you are never going to put 500mm lenses on it the Bassalt range are nice GT2931.

For lightweight Acratech ballhead, touch heavier but superb Arca Swiss Z1.

As Mark says you only spend it once, they will last a lifetime and do the job perfectly.

Which granny are you referring to though a slim one or a biggun:lol::lol::lol:

:exit:

sorry :coat:

I just got a Velbon 645 Pro Carbon with Giottos ball head... bargain £170 from RGB Tch in Middlesbrough. They sell online too. The legs are a fraction of the weight of the Manfrotto 055 I was looking at.

Well, my Velbon has a double ended screw so it looks like it'll accept two different diameter heads. It accepted the Giottos fine when I turned the screw around.
