Could anyone kindly tell me what the ring connecting the tripod head to the tripod body / legs is called, and if they can be bought individually?

Or is my tripod well and truly goosed. :(

Usually a threaded 3/8" bolt that the head screws down onto

Picture might be better to explain the part you mean, is the "ring" on the head or tripod?

Oops, should have thought of that. It's a Red Snapper, and it's this bit. You may not be able to see from the pic, but the bolt that goes through the ring, then reduces down to a smaller size which fits the head, has sheared off.

If it is Redsnapper, they will be able to help you.

Either replace the part or buy a 3/8ths to 1/4 adapter and a bit of 1/4 threaded bar/bolt with the head cut off.
The adapter and bar is a fix, not ideal but a fix, a replacement part would be better especially if you aren't particularly...."handy"...:)

If you cannot get a spare from Red Snapper, which I imagine you can, and you attempt a repair you will need a 3/8 BSW to 1/4 BSW adapter and a BSW bolt. Tripod heads must be one of the last bastions of imperial measurement left.

If you can get spares then I would buy several because looking at the sheared part it doesn't look the best design. It looks as if the 1/4 section has been undercut.

Can you unscrew the remaining thread from the ring?

Thanks guys. I am reasonably handy so I'll give the 'fix' a try, but in the interim, I'll be saving up for another tripod as to be honest, if I'm going to have a total of a grands worth of kit perched on top of it, then I need to have a bit of faith in it.

It's very probably my being heavy handed, it has been known to happen.

I'd contact Redsnapper - from what I've heard they have very good customer service.

Even if you are saving for a new tripod, I'd still try to get this one fixed properly if you're going to be using it...

After a review of finances, or to put it another way, selling something from another hobby of mine, I've bought a Giottos tripod from a member of this forum with enough change to put a new head on it.

I'll fix the RS in my own time and keep it as a spare. Thanks once again for your help.

Yes, you can buy that part form redsnapper.

When I had a redsnapper tripod I bought a second column kit for about a tenner.

I feel it only fair to tell everyone that on contacting RS, they sent me a replacement part FOC and the tripod is now as new.

Thank you Red Snapper. :)

That's great news and great customer service.

Thats good of them......im looking at tripods now myself.......might have to be an RS one if thats what there service is like

Thanks for the thread update.

Whilst the service may be good, the tripods appear to break quite regularly going by all the threads on here.

I had one briefly and wasnt wowed by it. I bought a second hand Gitzo for not more than the redsnapper and its built like a tank.

I have a CF tripod from RS and its very well built, stable and light enough to carry all day. You might find that the number of users here with RS tripods is pretty high and that fact alone accounts for a number of threads on them. Customer service has always been praised when dealing with RS and that's always a positive for me

I have a spare as I bought a Manfrotto 410 geared head for mine, so if you want to cover the postage it's yours..

EDIT: Sorry, just looked and the part you need is in use please excuse me...

Andrew, the thought is much appreciated anyway. :)
