I am on vacation and forgot my tripod. Does anyone have any ideas what I could use in replace of tripod. I was going to be shooting fireworks and family portraits

What have you got?

Something like a sandbag will work - could be sand, rice or anything similar that will hold it's shape and support the weight of the camera.

I am still traveling didn't make it to my destination yet to see what I can use

Rocks, walls, fences, beer glasses, broomstick, trees/branches; bags of flour/ sugar/pasta.
Have fun thinking up possibilities :)

A sock or two, stuffed with your choice of sand/soya beans/sugar/flour/grass clippings etc etc then with the end tied off. You want it firm but squishy.

Thanks for the ideas everyone. Do I hold the sock and the camera rest on the sock. I have a shuttler Remote with me

If you have the base plate for your tripod, with the screw attachment you can use a long piece of string as a makeshift tripod! Long enough to go from beneath one of your feet, loop through the ring on your base plate and back down to your other foot, with enough spare for it to be held tight by your own weight. Simply loop through, stand on the ends and pull tight.... Makes a great stabiliser for your camera and a lot less of a hassle to carry around. Maybe not quite as good as a tripod, but in an emergency and the absence of a convenient fence/table/wall/tree better than nothing ....

Failing that, you could loop the string over the base of your lens where it attaches to your camera, but not a great thing to do .... Enjoy your trip anyway ....

That made no sense to me whatsoever...........

To clarify, lets say there are 4 socks in play. Sock number 1, a littleish sock, gets filled with your chosen stuffing and placed on the ground/wall/car roof/borrowed milk crate/bar stool/pretty solid object and sits under the lens staying clear of the focus ring. Sock number 2 if required being a slightly larger sock can replace sock number 1 under the lens to give a little more elevation and sock number 1 moves to under the body. Socks 3 and 4 go on the left and right feet respectively unless you are wearing sandals or flip flops. IS off (the lens, not the socks) and shutter remote attached (to camera, not sock).

Hope this helps!

1kg bag of rice works great and when you're finished with it you can cook it. lol ;)

That's exactly what I carried around with me until I got my new tripod which can do super low down shots lol. Tasted great after as well.

what? LOL Of course not, that would be the same as just holding the camera.. except your holding a camera and a sock :)

Look for anything that can hold the camera still and pointed in the direction you want. Often resting on a wall works, and if you need some upward tilt, wedging lens caps under the lens barrel will acheive this.

Small bean bags can be used, or as already suggested bags of rice.

Socks are useful for placing under the lens when the camera is places on a wall or bench etc.

I used a stone wall once and propped the camera securely with beanbags I bought cheap from a seaside toy shop.

Its a bit silly of you to forget a tripod, but use everything you have by hand :)
