Tripod with gimbal

I have just purchased a gimbal mainly to use with my 150-600 Tamron lens.

I've not actually used the tripod with the gimbal as yet, just for testing the balance, action ect. but I do like the action, the fluid action is smooth and will comfortably hold the 150-600 at any zoom length and still allow easy smooth pan & tilt. So much so I would really like this to be the only tripod I carry with me.

The problems being.

1: The tripod & gimbal alone weighs in a 3.345kg

2: The collapsed height is Tripod = 55cm, gimbal = 25, Total 80cm as against 8cm for 3 axis head giving a total height of 63cm. The height of my backpack is only 50cm. The 3 axis head if fine for the camera and 75-300mm zoom but undersized for the 150-600mm.

There is no space in the backpack to carry the gimbal seperate. Would you advise removing the gimbal and carrying it separate or carry with it attached to the tripod?

How would you carry them if they were yours?

I do have a smaller tripod but it's classed as travel/compact. Needs to have legs & centre column fully extended to be at eye height but bottom section of legs are too flimsy to be extended.

Another tripod is out of the question (financially). Any suggestions?

I don't think there is enough space in my backpack do if advice is to remove it then how would you carry it?

I try to keep walking down (temporary health issues that may actually be permanent) to around 4 mile. Camera with 150-600mm 3kg, tripod with gimble 3.345kg and backpack with rest of kit would probably bring total weight to just under 10kg

I do have 2 camera slings and could make a carry bag for tripod/gimbal if needed.

Edited to add

I could also just make a carry strap for it rather than a bag.

I would as well the gimbal will lock in position so it’s easy to attach a carry strap .. alternately if your using a arca type plate on gimbal and lens just leave it attached and shoulder it ,camera, lens, gimbal and tripod as one unit

I use arca swiss on everything, even the carry strap. Since getting the 150-600mm lens I have been meaning to mod the safety check by extending it and fastening it to the slider part (marked in red (image 1) to provide a safe attachment point should the hook/swivel break. It would reduce the risk of the camera crashing to the floor/ground.

Image 2 shows the assembly attached to the harness (similar to the black rapid but a lot cheaper, it is STRONG). There is actually no tension in the safety strap, the camera is balanced on the lens foot and there is no need to unscrew the harness or fit a tripod plate, just undo the arca swiss and pop on to the arca swiss gimbal.

Are you meaning fully assembled?
Yes most wildlife photographers do ,myself included till I had to change to MFT due to a dodgy heart

Just out of interest what gimbal do you use.? I have the same lens and had been contemplating which to get. I don’t particularly feel I can justify the outlay on a wimberley!

Nest NT-530 Carbon Fibre Gimbal Head, got it secondhand for £50.

Had been looking at a new Gitzo Fluid Gimbal Head till I saw the Nest.
