Hi all, I am wondering if anyone has used a combination of the Manfrotto 055cxpro3 tripod, or any tripod really, with a 701HDV head for use with their SLR and photographing motorsport and fast jets.
I have been offered the same combination by a mate who used the setup for video. I have not been able to test properly yet so I am asking the question, although I have tried indoors with my camera and heaviest lens purely in panning etc. It is the use of this type of head I am particularly interested in as it will be a big outlay if it dosen't work for me.
Cheers Andrew.

I already have a head along those lines borrowed from my father in law, and I am not getting on with it really.
Thanks Ken.

You will get better results with a gimbal head i would think. Most fluid heads ive tried are quite heavily damped compared to a gimbal head.

what don't you like about the gimbal? It may just need some lubrication to help free it up

I think you need to try the fluid head, maybe go next to a motorway and try that

I'm sorry I misunderstood, it is a ball head I have tried and just didn't get on with it. I have also been looking at gimbal heads now I know exactly what I am looking for, the cost may be prohibitive at the moment though.
I tried the fluid head this morning with the dog, but she was too hot to put any effort in so the test was inconclusive. There is a rally at the weekend so I am hoping to make that as my test session.
Many thanks for your input guys.
Cheers, Andrew.:)

Stills, Andrew, for motorsport and fast jets more than anything.:)

I used the monopod on a rally, no problem, but couldn't get on with the monopod and ball head at an airshow, I needed a lot more elevation. Hand held was ok for the jets but I struggled to get crisp shots of the prop aircraft. Perhaps I really need to concentrate on my tecnique.
