Hi need some looking for cheap tripod for a week away manly landscape lenses taking 11-16 and baron 17- 50 on a Sony a 580 , I have a redsnapper that I'm happy with, so this is just for travel really don't won't to spend too much as it won't get much use after iv been , any help would be greatly appreciated,

Have you considered a Monopod? Usually shorter, more acceptable in places that do not allow tripods to be set up and usually very stable. It would then give you two useful supports. I use a ball head on mine and use it more often than a tripod.

If it's for flying, check with the airline and/or airport security that the tripod will be allowed as hand baggage - it may well not be.

Hi thanks for reply I'm looking to do some long exposures so monopod Wont really work, my tripod is a little to big to go In my hand luggage so that's why I though I would need a different one

I pack my tripod in the hold luggage, in the middle of the case, surrouded by (if not wrapped in) towels, shirts etc.

You could consider on of the sturdier GorillaPods - the SLR Zoom or the Focus. combined with a reasonable ball head, that should be stable enough for the body/lens combination you mention, especially when wrapped around something solid, although with those shorter and maybe lighter lenses, the 'Pods may be stable enough as low level tripods as well.

Agreed - you either need written confirmation from the airline/security agency that you can take it on as carry on, or stick it in with your luggage.

I can imagine getting to security and being told "You can't take that, you'll have to check it."

Remember to check with the relevant agency where you are flying to, as well - they may have different interpretations of what can be carried on when you're flying home. (Assuming you're leaving the country). Security levels can change day to day, so even if you can carry it on, it's worth checking that it does fit in your checked suitcase just in case

And don't always take what the airline says as gospel - they don't make the rules.

I would just put your tripod in the hold luggage, any tripod that would get pass security as hand luggage,is properly not going to be up to the job :)

Ok rang airline said its ok for hang luggage,

Well I haven't got any suit cases for my trip just hand luggage your only allowed one bag so it has to fit in bag

If weight is an issue, look at the carbon tripods. Red snapper have a good rep, or the main brands. Jessops is doing a manfrotto carbon tripod for about £100, or the alternative is look at the Gorillapod SLR-ZOOM

So, just the security at both ends to check with now! As Spencer (OutLore) pointed out, it's them who enforce the rules, not the airline. I've not had any problem taking my GorillaPod SLR Zoom and ball head as hand luggage to Crete and back several times but have seen tripods confiscated at security - by the time you get that far, you have no option but to surrender the thing...

Thanks guys but with that inn mind I don't want to spins 100 for some jumped up jobs worth taking so how's about a cheap option that will be better then a monopod and won't be much of a issue if confiscated

IMO, a cheap tripod isn't worth even the low price. I'll bet that many here have a couple in the back of assorted cupboards that are quite simply not up to the job.

Another option could be a Pod - basically a round beanbag with a tripod thread on the top. Not ideal for SLRs but great for compacts.

Is posting a decent tripod both ways an option?

Sorry but IMO, airport security aren't necessarily jumped up jobsworths! I would far rather they were there and confiscating potential weapons than have someone (not for one second insinuating that you come under this description!) with a problem wrap said weapon around the back of my head. While it may be inconvenient, I also don't resent them going through my camera bag and swabbing all the contents - I would far rather that than end up on a gymnasium floor in a rubber sleeping bag.

Trek Tech TPod Table Tripod MagMount I have one of these althou it would fit in hand luggage I'm not sure if the size would let you down... I've had a gripped D700 & 70-200 VRII on one...

Stands about 13in high extended.... Its a handy little thing (even reviewed on Amazon)

My comments were not meant to cause affence ! Tripod , I could easyly hurt with a pen its all over the top , you can't stop lunatics ,I'm not saying its airport staff fault or being disrespectful to the staff but its all pc gone mad, if I wan't to hurt you its easy! I get the game but in my apinion , its all not necessary and not because I wan't to take my tripod on board, anyway surly I a cheap 40 quid small tripod would be better the nothing ! Just look at what they did with boxs cutters !

That's what I'm talking about something like that !

Flying in the US I got told off by security for having a monopod in hand luggage as it could be used as a club. Admittedly I hadn't helped myself by having it strapped outside my rucksack!

You can guess what happened next time - I stupidly packed it at the side of my hold luggage and the handlers must have dropped the bag as one of the clips broke.

So, the conclusion is - pack it in your hold luggage, but in the middle and wrapped in clothes.

Where are you going? If you're going to buy a cheapy, could you buy one there, then trade it in/sell it at a pawn shop afterwards?

 Crikey - thats got to be a first, as I usually get laughed at when I mention it :p

errrr never though of that like it .......

I picked up one second hand after the T'pod, as I thought it might be useful with longer lenses, but haven't used it in anger yet. I wouldn't say it is huge; compared to the T'pod, yes, but it folds down reasonably compact.

my threeleggedthing brian fits in my hand luggage :)

Saw a tripod apparently getting confiscated at Miami Airport security yesterday, I didn't hang around as I was only too pleased to get through without my gear being examined/challenged.
There was quite a ruckus going on, the passenger was American and was carrying a ThnkTank Airport bag like mine which appeared to be stuffed full of gear (like mine) and had strapped the tripod to the outside.
