Tripod Terminology

Hello.

I was wondering [well, hopeful] really whether someone could please tell me what the correct terminology would be describe a certain tripod movement / flexure / position.

I am currently looking into buying new tripods for work. Currently we have one, which the top section can be rotated by 90 degrees [not between landscape and portrait at the head unit, but the upper arm rotates by 90 degrees] so that a right angle is created between the tripod legs and the upper unit. This leaves the camera lens facing downwards and parrallel to the floor [we take a lot of photographs of long flat things laid on the floor as part of my job]. Anyway, I hope someone can understand what I am talking about and could offer me some advice as to what I need to be looking for in the tripod descriptions to define that movement.

Many thanks for your help.

pan: swing from side to side
tilt: swing up and down (the one you want) :rules:

dunno: the landscape/portrait one you described!

or Manfrotto 055prob, Im getting the 190prob, as it will be great for low macro shots, as the legs go nearly flat and the centre column rotates

No the 055 has a fixed column (I have 2) and the 190 has the swinging column (1 have 1) :)

The 190 is quick to go between vertical and horizontal but with the 055 you can remove the column and fit it upside down for even lower stuff.

I have the 055ProB which has the removable, invertible and perpendicular column. Really nice bit of kit, just extend fully and push a quick release button to position away from vertical.

There is a 055XDB which is just a standard centre column as far as i can see.

I think it's the "Pro" models that have the horizontal columns.

It's called a tilting centre column. A lot of Manfrottos have it, but they only go to a locked horizontal position I think.

You can also get ones where the centre column can be tited and locked at different angles.

Im going for the 190 ProB as it can hold an heavier load weight, as I also want to use it for my gimbal head and long lens

If you want to try both of them just pop round and you can borrow both to try.
