Hello,

I'm after a tripod for my Cannon 1000D, I'm very new to this serious photography business and would appreciate a little help in deciding what to get.

I want to spend around £100 - 150, but I don't mind spending more if it's justified.

I also, wanted to know if it would be practical to also purchase a monopod. I travel with work alot and I thought it might give me a bit more versatility? (Although I fear, I may be getting a little ahead of myself there....)

All suggestions are more than welcome.

Cheers!

I picked up a 2nd hand Manfrotto 190PROBX with a 222 joystick head on eBay for around £100. It's a good tripod - goes nice and high, and nice and low too. Is sturdy and easy to manoeuvre. Plus it's got a central column so can go horizontal as well as vertical. The only thing I would say is it's quite heavy, but I think that unless you can afford to go carbon fibre, then it's always going to be the case at the £100 mark.

Saying that, I see Jessops have a carbon fibre tripod (excl. head) at £99. But I don't know how good or bad or otherwise it is ...

Hi, You certainly picked a subject there..... I think there are more "debates" about this than anything. I won't mention any brands other than Manfrotto and Gitzo. Both are excellent. But ALL tripods are useless if you leave them at home because they are too heavy... If in doubt buy one that you will carry for two hours and not need a rest. Often light can mean "cheaply made" BUT if it gets your camera staedy in the right postion when you need it who cares...? Red snapper seem pretty good and very reasonable while being built solidly.. In all cases get a ball head. one lever beats three any day!

I got a Manfrotto 055 Clicky Linky and 496RC2 Ballhead Clicky Linky yesterday £174 for both, great for low macro shots as the tripod goes flat to the floor and center column can also go in a horizontal position, also its strong enough (max capacity 7KG) to hold a Gimbal head and long lens

Just Dave speaks the truth!

A centre column that goes horizontal is one of the most useful features. I bought a Giottos MTL 9531 for about £90.

Redsnapper's monopod is worth a look, £40 ish. It comes with a small ballhead which gives a chance to try out that type of head before buying.

Redsnapper monopod is £25 :-) (I love my one)

You could do worse than one of their tripods as well.... I have a 283C with a Manfrotto 460MG 3 way head.

This is a great deal, tripod + ball head...

Cheers for all the suggestions, I reckon I'll probably just go for the Manfrotto 055.

You're a helpful bunch here, thank you!

Hopefully I can parade the fruits of my labour on this forum soon.

I wouldn't even spend that much on a tripod. Get yourself some good glass instead. I have a Hama Star 61 and its amazing for what I paid(£10)

Last time I looked "good glass" can't be had for under a hundred quid...? ( Nifty fifty excepted!)

Same here with the Giotto MTL 9531B - was alot cheaper than the Manfrotto version with the horizontal columm....
