Hi,several years back i purchased the gitzo 1340 symantech carbon fibre tripod .Three legs, This was to use with my 500 f4 lens and wimberly set up.
The tripod did the job very well and i still love it and use it . However i have now sold all my heavy gear and presently my main passion is for landscape work.
As my main locations are in lake district and a fair bit of hiking steep walking etc and due to my age i am looking for a tripod that will better meet my needs.
Due to the size of my gitzo i find i cannot secure to my backpack so it has to be carried all the time and this only leaves one hand free.
I am on the look out for a very sturdy lighweight model that would be ocasionally strapped to my backpack. I am also over six foot so it would need to be a good height.
Not really into centre colums either.Any ideas.

The Gitzo Traveler 1545T is light, packs down small, but extends to a slightly greater height and is more rigid than other lightweight tripods I've looked at. I am not blessed with your height, but with the optional matching head and a tallish camera like the D800, the viewfinder is slightly above my eye level with the legs extended all the way. In your case, you will have to use some centre column, but I think that will be true for anything this light and portable. It's on discount at the moment (just the legs or the kit with head):

The GH1382TQD head is nice, light, fits between the legs when folded, and is Arca-compatible. There's no independent friction control (the larger head they bundle with the Series 2 kit has this).

There are also discounts on other Traveler models:

Thank you for replys i will look more closely into the gitzo range .Make a decision ,the propably sell the 1340.

I bought a Sirui T-02SK last year, as a lightweight 'travel' tripod. CF legs, very versatile, very lightweight (900g or so), easy to use. Might not be in quite the same league, quality wise, as those Gitzos etc, but I think I paid like £180 or so. I like it; it's decent quality, loads better than Velbon etc type offerings imo.

Cameraworld have a selection of Sirui tripods:
