My Vanguard Alta Pro 263 is starting to show signs it's on it's death bed. Does anybody have any recommendations for an upgrade. Willing to spend a little but not break the bank (around £200-£300). It needs to have individually adjustable legs (Not linked together when opening), and be able to shoot near to the ground or have a shorter centre column included (Not one where you have to rotate the centre column and shoot upside down). It also still needs to be a decent height when fully extended.

I know this is all a bit precise, but after looking on the likes if WEX, etc, I'm getting overwhelmed by options and hoped someone had some pearls for me to investigate.

Thanks in advance.

P.S It doesn't need to be carbon fibre

You haven't said what lenses it's going to be used with.

There have been a few recent threads that mention feisol, induro and manfrotto as options in your price range. You may be lucky to still find a gitzo from there sale a few months ago. I'm not sure if they still have any available but some were in the £300 range.

3LT do some around that price too 0 think they are meant to be good?

To be honest, it'll be used with a broad range - from 17-40 f4 for landscapes right up to a 300 f2.8 with converter on for wildlife.

Maybe with a 300mm 2.8/TC combo you might be better served with an 055 series in the Manfrotto range.

I used to have a 3LT CF Brian which was ok for travel, but I wouldn't have liked to put a 300mm 2.8 on it.

I have a benro com47axl which I use with my 150-600 lens. The legs open right out so the camera is close to the ground.
I'd doesn't have a centre column though. It may be OTT for what you need, but one of the other tripods that they do may fit the bill.

I like my Benro that I got from this forum, it's carbon fibre but a really solid working platform.

I was looking at the 055xpro, but the price threw me off a bit. It's basically the same as the vanguard, but more expensive. I'm tempted to just replace like for like. Which leads me on to my next question. I've had this tripod for about 2-3 years now. Been thrown all over the place (metaphorically speaking), and used in the sea regularly. Should I expect a longer life, or is this about right for lots of usage?

Any make of tripod you are thinking about do try it out fully extended to check for movement.

Have a look at the Benro range, I find them a good balance between price and quality.

Might help to read the other replies :)
