Looking for a compact tripod to carry with a small/medium sized camera I have a Manfrotto 190XPROB and its a bit bulky (but very good) and looking at smaller options. I dont want a cheap and nasty thing or a carbon fibre top of the range thing! Would appreciate some genuine user feedback if you have the time

Currently looking at getting the velbon ultra rexi L (1.3kg) with a giottos 5011 3way fluid head (0.45kg). Should hopefully be usable for everyday as well as being light and compact enough to carry around / travel (using with a 550d) Tripod is nice and compact when folded and will still fit in the tripod bag with the head.

Mate has this set up which i'm currently trialing and fairly impressed so far. He has the bigger head (giottos 5001) but its double the weight at 0.9kg as opposed to 0.45kg. Only difference i can see is the size of the qr plate and the load capacity, 6kg v 4kg, so i'm probably going with the 5011 head as will still cope with the 550d + lenses. Cost should be around £140 for that set up if you shop around.

How about the 190 cxpro4?

Yes I know you said not carbon, but my daughter has one and it only weighs 1.3kg, folded length is 50cm and stable

Affordable too especially as you could then sell your current tripod on

Will check it out !

The Giottos MTL8361B is about £170. It's not perfect, but I like the carbon fibre as they are lighter and better absorb vibrations, so good for stability. They are not cold on the hands in the winter either. If you budget allows, then a Manfrotto equivalent would be getter. Of course, you'll need a decent head. I'm a strong believer in spending good money on a tripod / head, as they will out last many cameras, and one that collapses on you or is fiddly to use or is just unstable will be money down the drain. My old Manfrotto 055 is still going strong after 25 years, so quality seems to count.
