As the title says, after a light-weight and compact tripod that'll comfortably hold the bronica sq. any suggestions?

Well suppose any of the carbon fibre ones would be good.

The one I use the most is the Benbo MkI, not the lightest tripod but very versatile.

To be honest, the Bronny's aren't all that different in weight etc. to a pro-digital (or gripped "enthusiast" model) - especially with some of the bigger AF lenses, so most of the decent carbon jobs will suffice.

Lightweight + sturdy = if only

There's only going to be so much weight you can save before stability becomes an issue. And, as Mark points out, it's just a case of weight. I'd weigh how much your SQ is, work out what an equivalent DSLR set up would and check the max weights of the various tripod heads.

Most tripods will manage a SQ

My Aluminium Giottos Vitruvian (very compact and light (weighs 1.5kg)) can easily deal with my RB67 at full height and is stable enough for 1-2 minute exposures, I didnt use the stock head as i already had a Cullmann CB7 ballhead which hasnt missed a beat yet. The tripod it rated for 4Kg which is more than the RB67 weighs and thats a sodding heavy camera

surprisingly the bronny comes in just over 2kg, i was under the impression it was heavier than it is. the manfrotto 732cy seems a popular tripod, for under £100 it comes in budget too. anyone got experience of this tripod for nightime long exposures?

edit: any head recommendations? don't like the look of the 3 way it can come with. always fancied a ballhead, they look so much easier.

another edit: on further inspection the 732cy looks pretty small and flimsy. back to square one.

richboyphoto, I have a Velbon 640 which accomodates my SQ-Ai and is very stable. Later acquiring a Mamiya RB67, which is much heavier than the Bronica, I tried the Velbon 640, expecting problems; but again the Velbon holds it nice and steady. I bought a Manfrotto quick release plate to use with the Velbon tripod, a bit better than the Velbon plate. If you are looking for something on the 'cheap' side then the Velbon will do. If you have money to spend then go for the dearer makes and models.
