Hiya all!
Im on the hunt for a small leightweight tripod. Ive got a canon 400d and gona buy a new lens ( not sure what yet). Im gonna be walking alot to get some good landscape shots, and my only transport is a motorbike! Thats why it must be lightweight and small.
Please please could you suggest something? Also if you have any suggestions for lenses I would appreciate it.
THANKS:wave:

wow, some rather large questions there.

what do you want to take pics of? how much you got to spend?

what range do you think you need?

OK, that was a bit of a rubbish post eh?! Im leaning towards landscape pics and some animals/nature. . . . . . . .
Im not looking at spending thousands. . ..a few hundred sounds more like it but not toooo much. im quite new to this so I need help with EVERYTHING!

Lightweight and stable usually means a fair bit of dosh. Give us some idea of what you're prepared to pay. You certainly don't need to be spending thousands though.;)

I am not sure. can I get anything decent for less than £100? It has to be light. .. us women are not as strong as you guys! Ha ha also walking for miles with a heavy thing doesnt seem much fun in the heat! For the lens I guess up to £500 VERY MAX!

When it comes to humping a tripod around, it isn't just the weight you need to consider, it's closed overall length - you want it as compact as possible.

Have a look at the Benbo Compact Trekker at about 3.5 lbs without a head. Fantastically adaptable tripod - there isn't anything you can't do with them, but the legs fold down side by side as opposed to coming together like a conventional tripod, and they can take a bit of getting used to, as erecting them can be like wrestling with a set of manic bagpipes until you get used to them. :D

I'm not saying this the best price though, you'll need to check around.

You will not believe the weight of this baby - CT-3441Bblue

Introducing the new compact tripod for traveler CT-3441. Not only CT-3441 inherits some of the best features from our previous tripod models, its' making materials have been upgraded, and the parts are exquisitely manufactured. The diameter of the largest leg tube is 2.8 cm. With a 2-section telescopic center column, it can reach 186 cm when fully extended, but the total weight is only 0.9 Kg and the folded length is only 43 cm. Adding our CB-30 ballhead give a total weight of 1.1 Kg.

I got one a few months back. One of my better purchases :p

I've only heard good things about those Feisol tripods. It sounds great, but I think it works out about double what the lady wants to pay? Might be worth making the stretch for though. It's important to be happy with a tripod, or you just wont take it with you - it's as simple as that. I know we say this to the point of nausea, but a tripod is one of the most important bits of kit you'll ever buy - it would be on my priorities list ahead of lenses.

Seems like we're looking for the same kind of thing as far as tripods go. For lightweight legs that come well recommended, the best deal I can find is the Velbon CF-630, which costs around 170 and weighs 1.35Kg - about the same weight as most of those aluminium mini-tripods, I think. Perhaps you could go for a smaller model as you may not be as tall as me.

Unfortunately the head that comes with the legs is a cheapie, so that may need upgrading... and it seems like a good head will cost more than the legs. So I'm thinking I will get the Velbon and, if the head is no good, spend another 220 on the Acratech Ultimate Ballhead. :bonk: It's one of the only lightweight ballheads that seems to be recommended (450g) and it's the only one for sale in Blighty.

That would leave you enough for the 55-250 IS and a tank of petrol. :D

Quite interested if anyone has gear from either of those manufacturers btw.
