Tripod in Hand- Luggage ?

My lovely wife kindly understood my hints at Christmas and bought me a Manfrotto befree travel tripod.
I always use my camera bag as hand luggage on the plane and as this little tripod fits in my bag along i wondered if it would be ok to do so.
My only concern is if i get to the security point and they say, camera gear is ok sir, but not the tripod (possible weapon ?)
By then the suitcases will be travelling around Manchester Airport, so i couldn't go put in my case.
Likewise i don't want to put it in the case and then a security chap think its some sort of weapon.

Am sure many of you will have taken a tripod on board a plane, just wondered which is the best way to pack it.

Agree, I always put my tripod in hold luggage.
 
Hi, Put it in checked baggage, I think your own doubts should answer the question. You'll not need it during the flight anyway.
 
Took my befree hand luggage to iceland last week from iceland, the only thing they were bothered about in my bag was a stainless steel thermos!

I opted for hand luggage as easyjet have no weight limit for carry on so it left more weight in the hold for bulky stuff. Plus if our suitcase had been lost I would have missed the first night of northern lights pictures without it!

The befree has no spikes so shouldn't be an issue.

I didn't even consider it a risk, it never entered my head until I read this thread! Hand luggage seemed logical to me given the lack of weight restriction on hand luggage and the risk of sleazy jet loosing it!
 
At least 5 people here can see an issue with a tripod being regarded as some sort of weapon, what kind of odds do you think there are that the occasional security screener at an airport might have the same thought?

Its not worth the risk when the other bags are already booked in and you are approaching the boarding gate.

I know of someone who had his tripod confiscated by airport security.
 
I've taken my tripod, a Velbon Luxi L, as hand baggage about four or five times as I was not travelling with hold baggage. The one time I have have a tripod when I had hold bagggage, I put it in the hold. I've never had any issues though.
 
Tripods aren't specifically prohibited in hand luggage, but they're not specifically permitted either. Airport security have a certain amount of discretion, and getting into an argument about this when it's too late to transfer the tripod to your checked bag isn't a good situation. I'd put it into my checked luggage and avoid the risk.
