what are the build quality like on the latest Manfrotto ball heads? The 141RC pan and Tilt head I have has brilliant construction, no plastic parts, and the new ball head would need to be the same really.

Any recommendation?

sorry if im being condescending here, but you dont have to use a Manfrotto head on a manfrotto tripod, should be able to use any photographic tripod head on any tripod.

I cant comment on Manfrotto heads, i have a Kirk BH-1 as i think it is going to be well over what you need, but is extremely well engineered.

Manfrotto 488RC does it for me....so much so that I've just bought a second one.

Works fine with my 70-200/2.8 or 300/4 on a 30D but I prefer the tilt and pans with a focussing rail for macro work.
