Hi,

any recommendations on a head for macro, currently using Manfrotto 055 CLB legs and 488RC2 Ballhead but looking to replace the head with something more macro friendly, any thoughts?

Mike.

FWIW, I use a Gitzo G2272M 3-way with a Velbon Super Mag Slider.

Hi Mike I use a manfrotto junior geared head with my MPE65, this allows movement in one direction only so achieving constant alignment in the other 2 planes. With my newly accquired 100mm macro & ring flash I find a simple ball head on a monopod works very well & gives me a lot of free movement to get ligned up on the subject very quickly.

It would help if you specified a budget for this, since you could end-up spending a few ££ to a few £££. It all depends on how much you want to spend.

Not tried it, but my ideal macro setup would be a geared head with 2 stacked macro focusing rails.

This would be the best method, along with a wooden tripod. The wood tripod seems to absorbs much of any vibrations from shutter / mirror etc. So, for ultra macro, that would be best.

For 2D rails look at the Novoflex, but they are not cheap .. at about $600

Check out for different rails here, sorry it's a US site, I couldn't find one that has the variety and in UK.

I saw something at Focus, it's made by Manfrotto and cost about £50. I can't find it on WHE at all. It's a form of metal focusing adjustment that I think you could use for macro. I'll keep looking at post if I find it.

I think this is the one you're talking about.

This is the one I have; it's a good rail, not a very smooth one, but never the less a very good one.

That's the one Wail  Glad to hear it works OK as I was thinking of getting one. Will see how I go with the monopod during the summer.
