Tripod hand grip strap

I'm about to get a Fuji HS50 & am considering a tripod mount hand grip strap, good idea/bad idea?

If it's good, what to look for?

I thought about just getting a hand strap and even went and tried one out. They did not feel very secure to me and then I started wondering how practical it would be. I mean you are basically giving up your hand with one of them. You will only have one hand to reach into your backpack, get something out of your cars trunk. You get what I mean. IMO the tripod part is just a gimmick. I don't know about you but I rarely ever have the need to take my camera off a tripod to carry it around for a while and then reattach it again. Some people like hand grips (but I never see them being used) but to me a good sling strap is a much better way to carry a camera. They make them so you can quick release them and mount them on a tripod. Why give up your hand for a strap that has the potential to drop your camera when you do not have to?

I use a hand strap all the time on my SX50. When I upgrade to a DSLR I will be getting another for that. They are very secure, convenient and comfortable. The cheapo one I bought from ebay can certainly handle the weight of the SX50 and I would be happy to try it with a DSLR + tele zoom. It is no great inconvenience fishing around my over shoulder camera bag to change batteries with it attached. It is also a deterrent to theft. I recommend trying one out as they are very cheap.

They can become moist with sweat in hot weather but I just pull my sleeve under it which solves that issue.

I rarely use a tripod, preferring instead to use something in the environment. When I have the occasion to use a tripod it depends on the situation to keep it attached or not, usually not.

Can't recommend any; but they are a personal choice. Sometimes I would like one - when shooting street photography for example. I just put up with wrapping the shoulder strap around my hand in that case though, and the small inconvenience that brings when you want to put the camera down. I would hardly ever use one at work though, as 95% of the time I have two cameras on the go.

I wouldn't call it a gimmick. I have had to do exactly that, several times, for pretty much every job I've ever shot. No chance I'm going to be taking a strap on and off the camera for something as basic as using a tripod.

I tried a hand grip strap many years ago and just got a sweaty hand. These days, I wouldn't want a strap attached to the tripod socket as I'd rather leave it free for a quick-release plate.

The Herringbone hand straps are great, it's thickly padded and thus very comfortable. I use it on my 5D mark 2 all the time.

I also use an arca swiss plate designed for 5D2, it's also got a handstrap part. This way there's no over tightening the tripod screw and it stays solidly on the camera.

The plate also have a separate screw hole for the Q-strap bolt when I am walking long distances and need both hands. So no matter what I need to do, this plate and hand strap always stays on the camera.

The strap I use has a plate for attachment to the 1/4" mount on the camera with a 1/4" mount on the bottom of it. I put a quick release plate on that so it isn't an issue. You can get them with or without.

Ended up getting the optech sling system and the optech hand strap. Replaces the neck strap, wonderful things, highly recommended.
