Tripod for my D300

I have a cheap £40 tripod which I actually dont find too bad but its quite heavy and bulky. Im also starting to do more stuff that requires one so I thought id treat myself. I have had a browse on the net but I know nothing about them so I thought id ask you guys.

£150 is my limit, £130 would be better.
Ill be doing lots of walking with it (like the London meet for example) so quite light if possible.

Manfrotto 190XProB legs and a decent head would be pretty portatble. An 055XPROB would be better, but it's a bit heavy for a walkabout tripod.

Headwise, it depends on the kind you like. I have a Manfrotto 486 RC2 on my 190, but tbh while it's a great wee head,it's not up to the job of holding a D300 with the MB-D10 and a heavy lens.

Either set of legs plus a decent head should be comfortably within your budget.

I dont think I will ever get the battery grip and the biggest lens ill probably ever get would be the 70-200VR. Not for a while though. So do you think that head would be ok? It looks good, I like the idea of a ball.
 
Probably too heavy, but I can certainly dig my D300 and 70-200 out and set it up sans MB-D10 if you wish and see what happens...
 
Right.....with the 17-55 on it droops forward slightly and pulls the ball down when you try and lock it in place, however with the bigger 70-200 on it is fine, as it attaches to the lens,not the camera body.

So, yes a 190xPROB with a 486 RC head will do the job for you. Try Morris Photo, they usually have deals going on Manfrotto and they do free delivery :thumbs:

Thanks for checking it out. I don't have the 70-200 though, just I might get it in the future. I have the Tamron 17-50 which im guessing is about the same size as the 17-55 so would this not be suitable?

The 488 (that's what's on my 055) is a much bigger, sturdier head, I just felt it was a bit big on the 190 for a walkabout tripod.

I certainly don't recall having any issues using the tripod with the D300/Tamron combo, however the 17-50 weighs a fraction of what the 17-55 does as the Nikon is metal and the Tamron plastic.

:lol: I forgot to mention the other reason I bought a 486 rather than another 488.....it was cheaper....oh, okay, that was the main reason :lol:

Surely, a simple search would reveal a myriad of threads regarding tripods.Which, would save all the nice people on here repeating their own sound advice............:shrug:
 
Same could be said for the daily round of "Help, which dslr should I buy?" and "should I buy a nifty fifty?" posts :shrug:

Well, it is in the back of my mind that I need a new pod, and I have the kit mentioned, so I think it's a valid thread for casual viewers like myself, and if members don't mind repeating advice then where's the harm - the world still turns !

It's also valid because the op was asking about specific camera gear, rather than just a general "which tripod?" sort of thing
 
Also give a thought to a monopod. Easy to carry- light but strong, ideal in a crowded street no legs sticking out to trip passers by with. Also very cheap infact I got a free Manfrotto 679B worth over £30 when I subscribed to a photographic mag in their latest issue.

I think they're always valid. New models are released, the gear that sits on them change, new forum users arrive with different experiences to relay.

Ive just notcied what you said about the seach button. I searched tripods but it picks up threads that mention tripops in, not just the title so its not a great help as about 25 threads a day mention tripops. Also I wanted to know what would be a good one for my specifications.

The advanced search has the drop down box underneath the keyword entry box to search only thread titles.:thumbs:
