Hi Guys,

I am in the market for a Carbon Fibre tripod and wanted to get some views from experienced togs.

I currently have a Manfrotto but its aluminium and heavy. In addition the tripod head I have is a bulky pan and tilt (so all in all not ideal for carrying during a day out).

What I'm looking for is a light Carbon Fibre tripod and head that I can carry if need be. My main interest is landscape/seascape photography so, it will have to be light.

I currently have a gripped 500D with the 17-40mm L, 70-200 f4 L, 10-22mm lenses. I'll be upgrading to a 5D Mk II soon so it would also need to handle the weight of that with those lenses.

Any thoughts?

Id be looking to spend around £300 for legs and a head and would like to stick with Manfrotto but all suggestions welcome.

Cheers

I'd say look at Giotto's aswell, Mines is a fantastic bit of kit,all be it Aluminium i can't fault it,and took a battering when i dropped it down a flight of concrete stairs in the flat one day and the stairs took the worst of the abuse.

I'm in a very similar situation to yourself Andrew - seascapes and landscapes. After months of deliberation, finally settled on a Giottos carbon fibre MTL8350B today. Reasonable fold down size and weight for the money (£179) and the system is very flexible in that the head can be rotated to almost any angle - unlike the Manfrotto which is just 180 degrees. Was also thinking about the three-legged-thing but they're not available till mid July and I need it for my hols this Friday. Benro have some good CF ones too but you can't get them local - only mail order. (Benro CF 197EX looks good). If your looking for a Giottos ballhead by the way, I've got one going cheap! It's a MH7002-652 type with the single lever action. I got a new MH1311-652 (£72 at Calumet) to go with the new legs - seems a good match. Remember, you get a 5 year warranty with Giottos as well.

Good luck and let us know what you end up with.

Cheers, Dougie

Thanks all for the advice. I'm still pondering which to purchase. Ah decisions decisions.

Of all the hobbies to get into, I have to pick one that seems to keep my bank account constantly tittering on the edge!!
