Tripod any good?

What's your budget?

I've got a redsnapper withnball head and love it, works out about £70.

not too heavy or bulky to carry around, goes down really low (about 10cm from memory) and I'm very pleased with it.

and you can get different heads - I've got a ball head, but there are lots of different ones some of which might suit you better.

only thing I would have liked on it that it doesn't have is a hook on the underneath of the central column to hang stuff onto (bag, more weight, etc)

looks like the velbon fits your requirements Paula. My only concern would be having to detach the centre column when wanting to go down low.
 
Have a look at the Vanguard Alta Pros. No need to remove centre column to flip it round for low shots. Very please with mine. Quite light and packs up relatively small as well.
