Using a gripped Canon 5D Mk1 with a 70-200mm etc, any advice please for a decent sturdy tripod that won't cost a fortune.

Any advice on makes/models appreciated!

You can pick up used gitzo's for under £200 on eBay. I bagged a like new carbon fibre one for £150 and a head that still costs £270 new for about £100. It's as solid as a rock and light too . Holds my gripped d700 with my old sigma 120-400 at any angle I want without any droops.

Define fortune?

And what do you want to do e.g. scenarios of use? Does it need to be light?

I use Gitzo because they are reliable, well made and meet my requirements. Also, given that I don't need to replace every so often with another tripod that doesn't quite work I think the cost is pretty reasonable but I admit not everyone likes to balance thousands of pounds on top of proven kit:lol:

Have a look at redsnapper as well, they advertise on here and TP members get a discount.
 
Have a think about exactly what you're likely to use it for. If you are going to carry it far and wide you might want something light, if it's going into luggage you might want something compact and if you are going to want to get into awkward positions you might want something that enables the centre column to do something other than go straight up and down.

Once you're decided on some priorities your search can begin :D

When I use a tripod I use a Benbo because it enables me to get my camera into positions that an ordinary straight up and down one wouldn't allow. Plus it's much more stable than my previous Manfrotto 055.

Try Benro carbon tripods from ebay, honestly!

Bought mine from DC-Stuffs ebay store, quick shipping, good ball head, top quality, I think others here have been happy with their purchases too.

Under £100 you always have the redsnapper, I use mine (with Manfrotto head) with 5D and 70-200 f2.8.
 
The one thing that gets me about tripods is the legs... Why do almost all makers have the smallest leg at the bottom.
WHY is this a problem? well for strength you build from the bottom up starting with the biggest working to thinner. BUT also if the feet are in water, mud, sand or whatever when you fold the leg up all that muck will go up inside, even if you wash it off the water will go up as well.
Having the fattest legs at the bottom means the legs are on the outside, so nothing get inside the legs..
I use a gripped 7d with 70-200mm IS L 2.8 and the 100-400mm IS L and have x2 all work 100% on my Uni-Loc


Well that is why I have a Uni-Loc tripod as it is strong and made the way a tripod should be made it is like the Benbo which the designer are the same
