i'm looking to buy a decent tripod and head within the next few weeks so i thought i would put the feelers out now, my requirements are something very strong and sturdy, not fussed about a small size as i already have a velbon compact one for carrying under a rucksack, i will be using it to do a couple of weddings, friends have asked me to do, and some portraits... regarding the head something thats going to be again strong and precise and easy to manoeuvre, not sure if geared, ball, or 3 way head, which is best ?, ok over to you, oh and budget is £200-£250 all in,all feedback greatly appreciated

The manfotto 410 junior geared head is a bloody good bit of kit for the money. It's supposed to be essentially the same as the big one but smaller and 1/2 the cost.

That'll take about half your budget leaving a good choice of legs. Not what's about for how much these days but I'd have thought you'd get something good 'n' sturdy.

I have the 410 geared head, it's precise but not fast to change position. Mine including some 055 legs and a bag was about £260.

Not sure if a geared head is the rigt way to go for weddings though, others are probably in a better position to comment than me.
