Hi guys, my mother in law wants to know what I would like for xmas this year and was very surprised when she gave a budget of £100-150, after thinking about it I think a new tripod is the way to go, after doing a search it confirmed my suspicions that the redsnapper 283/4 with ball head is awesome for the money but one feature they do not appear to have is a horizontal centre column which I would like but do I need a horizontal column when you can position the legs independently?

Also what other quality options are there for that price range with horizontal centre columns?

Been doing some more research, the Giottos MTL9351B has caught my eye, any owners here? and any recommendations on a ball head?

Bang for buck, I think RedSnappers are probably hard to beat.

One of my tripods has a centre column that can be mounted horizontally - a feature I've used once since original testing and that was to ensure the legs/feet of the tripod didn't appear in a fisheye shot.

Have a look at the manufacturers' websites to see which tripods have the features you need then do some surfing (or footslogging) to see what the choices will cost you.

I have a Giottos Vitruvian CF (not sure of the model designation) which came with a good, light ball head. Can't remember what the whole thing cost me but it was a good deal at the time. Came with legs, head, bag and tools (allen keys). My other 2 ball heads are Manfrotto, mainly chosen due to the QR compatibility shared by all my supports apart from the Giottos which will mainly be used with my bridge camera rather than the SLR setup.

I've only used the horizontal column on my Manfrotto 190 once, not really a feature that would make or break a tripod for me now.

I've also got a Giottos Vitruvian (for travel as it packs up so small!) but the Aluminium version, the 170g weight saving of the CF version wasn't worth the price increase for me. It's very stable for a light weight tripod and has taken a beating as it's gone caving a few times as well as being hauled around the EU.

Certainly worth a look at the Vitruvian even though it's £15 over your budget it comes with a case which is actually really nice and has a full strap as well as normal handles.

I've just got a Redsnapper. It is WELL worth the money! Even get a free padded bag! Not something you get with the more expensive brands!

Another positive vote for the Redsnapper tripods, I bought one as my first tripod and it's still going strong. The aluminium ones are a tad on the heavy side though so not ideal if you're carrying them around all day
