We are planning a camping trip to Italy next week, weather permitting, visiting the Umbria region as well as specifically Naples/Pompeii, Rome, Florence and Pisa.

I have visited most of these places before, but not the Umbria region. Does anyone have any recommendations of places to visit/photograph in this area?

Thanks - Simon.

Pisa, do the tower then leave, nothing else there.

Florence, well, one could easily spend a few days there, very easily. Eat and drink away from the square and it is quite reasonable pricewise, find out where the locals go/recommend............Google Florence, there is loads to see, too much to type, but the centre is awesome.Take a tripod and do some night time shots.

Naples/Rome, can`t comment, never been.

Rome - Wow, what a place. Unfortunately I didn't have a camera at the time I went, nor was I interested in photography. I would love to return now. There are ancient monuments at every turn.

I imagine that you could get cracking shots at the Colleseum and Forum, especially night time at the Colleseum with some long exposures.

Trevi fountain - Best of luck if you can get near it, when we went it was PACKED - A huge fountain in a tiny area. Small streets and lots of wandering to do, it will be awesome I'm sure.

There is a thread here about visiting Rome.

I don't know if you have been to Pompeii, but you can easily spend a whole day there and maybe not see it all. It was quite busy when I visited, but that was around October, I can imagine it would be more busy at this time of year, but there was space to get pics with not many people in.

I didn't get to Herculaneum, but although smaller than Pompeii it is supposed to have the better ruins. It is one of the places I was going to visit, along with Naples, this year until money troubles arose. :(

Show us some pics when you get back. It'll be the closest I'll get for awhile. ;)

Thanks for the replies. Sorry, but I don't think I made myself very clear in my original post. I have been to Rome several times (my ex was from just outside Rome) and have also previously visited Naples/Pompeii, Florence and Pisa, so this will be my second trip to these places.

What I don't really know much about is Umbria. I have a guide book, but was just wondering if anyone had any specific recommendations for this area.

I didn't visit Herculaneum on my last visit to Pompeii though. Sounds like it is well worth a look.

Thanks again
Simon.

Just left north tuscany and there have been thunderstorms for 3 days, this morning was the worst downpour I've witnessed, Hope your tent is proofed...

The weather has been much the same here for the last 2 weeks, a bit crap! We would have gone a week or so ago, but for the weather, so have been holding out for better weather. It's looking good at the moment from Tuesday onwards. Fingers crossed! :)

Ooops, sorry Simon, didn`t realise you had been before, you probably know more than I, so i`ll butt out.........

If you are visiting Pisa take a short trip across to Lucca a small "walled Town" not too far, and one of the nicest towns i have been in Italy.

Hi Simon, :)

Umbria is amazing - a bit like Tuscany but quieter and every bit as beautiful. There are lots of little hilltop towns / villages. Not to miss: Assisi - much of the town has been restored since the earthquake which devatsed the area in '97 and makes for excellent photo opportunities if you like medieval (sp?) buildings; also there is Spello, Perugia, Gubbio, Spoleto, Lago Trasimeno. Mount Subasio behind Assisi has the Eremo delle Carceri - excellent walking area and stunning views into the valley on sunny days.

As a Franciscan, it is my 'other home' - I wish I could live there!

Hope you have good weather and look forward to seeing the photos.

Liz :D

Hi Liz,

Thanks for the information. It looks like we are going to base ourselves in Assisi. After spending most of the day yesterday researching the area in our guidebook and on the internet, it looks like we may stay a bit longer than we originally thought, as there seems to be so much to see!

Other places we had in mind were Orvieto, around Monti Sibillini and the waterfalls near Terni. Are the falls worth visiting this time of year?

Please stop raining this coming week :)

Thanks again
Simon.

Yes, there is masses to see! I stay in Assisi  several times a year and still find plenty of places to explore.

Definitely visit the Cascata delle Mamore (Waterfalls) but it's best to check the opening hours first.

When I've been out there in June it has never rained for long and the sun always seems to come out long enough to enjoy the gelato!

Have a great trip!

Liz
:D

(Azzurri to win!!)

If you are visiting Pisa take a short trip across to Lucca a small "walled Town" not too far, and one of the nicest towns i have been in Italy.

Yep I agree a good photo opportunity and not so rip off. park inside the walls 1euro per hour.

We are planning to briefly stop in Pisa for a look on the way back home, so will try to pass by Lucca as well, time allowing. Thanks for the suggestion.

we touched on assisi doing a fast week in italy before relaxing at lake garda

umbria seems to conjure up rolling landscape and quiet fields and villages
if you are self propelled you would be able to reach them and stop as you wished

i could google some stuff but thats not what you want..

the other places you said you had been to so i wont offer any suggestions there...except pisa...there is more there than the tower
so pinocchio told me
